Story
I guess you could call my latest job interview a success. I got hired, and it's way beyond my wildest dreams. The pay isn't great. And the hours are pretty much 24/7. But there's magic. And a portal to a fantasy world. Those kind of outweigh the negatives. At first, I thought I was just testing the latest VR survival RPG, but I'm starting to think this might not be a game after all. The monsters are definitely life-like and capable of carving me apart on their worst days. But on their best days, I make them mine.

Not the best
Reviewed: 04-24-25
The hardest part to get through was the constant "discussions" between the characters. No disagreements (Even minor) It's all just "Hmmm yes. I believe "we" have stumbled upon a fundamental truth of reality. Aren't "we" deep?"
A whole lot of Nothing happens. The "relationships" between the women and the "Grown" man are shallow at best.

Well that phrase is 70% of what the author has, and the reply each and every time? "Hardly!"
This is the longest Reddit Fantasy NSFW post I have ever read. Is it the worst of its kind on Audible? No! And it's better if you get the Omnibus (1 credit for 4 books is ok)

The planet of Kiln is where the tyrannical Mandate keeps its prison colony, and for inmates, the journey there is always a one-way trip. Life on Shelnora Island seemed to be perfect for me. A tropical paradise, great food, and beautiful women at the local sorority . . . until I crossed paths with a mysterious murder and sightings of an honest-to-God werewolf! Now I'm surrounded by three beautiful women, all drawn into the mystery, and it turns out that my new dog is a smoking hot shapeshifter. Life's gotten crazy, but maybe, if we all work together, we'll find out who the real killer is. Could it be the curmudgeonly divemaster with a grudge? The sleazy resort owner drumming up sensationalism for tourist bucks?

I give it a pass.
Names are hard to track and remember and it suffers from that SciFi made up names for things trope (But they are psychically able to communicate and we don't get the word for "tummy ache" just "Year/month/day"... etc ... Mason Lloyd does a pretty good job with all the voices.

Logan Morrison always fought for everything he had, but it never was much. Growing up truly alone did that to you. One day, when taking on an extra tutoring gig to help out a cute chick with a quirky name, she ends up bringing him back to her place. Cool, right? Well, the next morning, Logan wakes up in chains and comes to learn that Cherry Cola is one beautiful and unhinged monster girl member out of three in a small Fresco City witch coven. Their plans for him? Servitude.

WRONG!
Within minutes I'm beet red trying to turn the volume in my headphones down so no one at work hears what the MC is doing to this Vampire Witch he just met...
Move over Ray Porter. Aurora Bliss is on a level I don't think you can reach. I wonder if she is a method actor? How else is is getting this far into character?

Franck and Abraham pull it off again.
Reviewed: 08-20-24
Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck are unstoppable when it comes to Sci-Fi. I was a bit worried that they wouldn't be able to meet my expectations after the perfection of The Expanse, but here we are. Another awesome book with great characters, and a setting which baffles and delights at every turn.
Sure, like many first books in a series; it starts a little slow before you catch your bearings, Thankfully the superb talent of Jefferson Mays is enough to keep you going for the 40 or so minutes needed to catch you.
I was delighted with the aliens as well as the humans, and I can't wait to see where this is going... and where this awesome team goes next.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

IDK what it was like when the author or narrator were in the Army (Or if either of them were ever in for that matter) but HUA is not pronounced Hoo-ah in this mans army... it's Hoouh all one sound... try your best to sound like an ape that fell on his head hard enough to make him think 21k a year is enough compensation for a life that is %80 BS and %45 waiting around (And somehow that math checks out)
Still better than pronouncing it Hoorah (That's what it sounds like when you say it with off brand crayons stuck in your teeth)
