I have enjoyed the beginnings of the Sofie Metropolis series but will have to agree with the other reviewer that this book is NOT very good and it is certainly NOT enhanced by the lifeless rendition of the characters by the narrator. Unfortunately, in a talking book, everything rests on the narrator's shoulders...the ability to make a so-so book better not the least of it! The narrator did not step up to the plate on this one...nor did the writers.

I am embarrassed that I bought this. I should have paid attention to when Brown wrote it. It is the first book in the Texas series and it is not far removed from a harlequin romance. Truly, Brown was in her earliest stage of becoming the writer she is today. Making it even worse, the narrator was a woman, always a mistake when the main character is a man. Colleen Marlo has difficulty doing a Texas accent, making her Texans sound like the deep south. Hey y'all...Texas accents are NOT the same as Alabama.

As a librarian, I thought I would try out this audiobook aimed at the 12 - 15 age group. I was very disappointed. Even though it is difficult for me to view this from a "tween" perspective it is easy to say as a children's librarian that this is not well done nor age appropriate for the intended audience. Words are frequently mispronounced by the reader and accents are not consistent. In addition, the topics include casual sex, language, light usage of drugs and alcohol by underage students. I was disappointed. The author appeared to believe that by dropping expensive labels the book would be readable. The author was wrong and the writing was not enhanced by the reading.

This book was an unexpected surprise. The narrator captured the mood of the story superbly. This is a perfect book for a woman to read at a certain stage of her life. I could not put it down. I am adding all of Elizabeth Buchan's book to my shopping cart. Wonderful read. Highly recommended.

This book is so sickeningly sweet that you will need to schedule a dental appointment afterwards.
I felt as though I was being taught manners by a 70 year old woman with a Swedish accent.
Words were defined for the reader as if English is a second language.
In a fit of anxiety that I would empty my ipod audiobooks over the holidays I overdosed on Joanna Fluke and will never make that mistake again.

I packed my ipod with lots of Christmas enjoyment and this book was one of my choices. I enjoyed it very much. It was light and sweet and perfect with a cup of coffee, a pair of scissors, a wee bit of tape, and presents to wrap. This was the perfect book for the moment: what more can you ask?

The Friday Night Knitting Club was a good book BUT...I was very put off by the manner in which this book was read. The accents of the voices, most particularly that of the African Americans, were rather offensive. I do not know what the narrator's experience is with African Americans from the south but the Jim Crow accents she used were awful. MacDuffie also has a particularly hard time doing children without making them seem peevish and whiny. I prefer to have books read without fake voices for each part. When the narrator assigns an attitude to a part, she is deciding how we accept each character. James sounds like Uncle Tom with a mouthful of peanuts. Cat sounds like a 12 year old Valley Girl. Even Georgia, the main character, sounds like a young girl with less than a full deck of cards. Please, no more bad interpretations. We want to listen, but we are not attending a bad play.
If this book had been read in a straightforward way, I would have rated it higher.
