A challenge to finish
Reviewed: 02-04-25
I listen to a great number of books. The narrator sets the tone of the book without the listener knowing.
The narration is monotone and rarely can you tell the difference between characters.
Several times I started and finished other books just to be able to tolerate finishing this on.
I found the story required a serious leap of faith to believe what they were putting out.
I'm going on to the next in hopes this was an exception not the standard

Story
On Christmas Eve, DCI Mackenzie Jones is called to a shooting at a remote farmhouse. Ralph Mallender believes his father lies dead inside. When three more bodies are discovered, it's clear a festive family gathering has turned into a gruesome tragedy. At first it seems like an open and shut case: a murder suicide committed by Ralph's volatile brother Cameron. Then new evidence makes Mack suspect the man who reported the crime is in fact the perpetrator. But Mack isn't the only one with a stake in the case.

I love a twist. I was sure I'd figured out early who the true culprit was but when the results were revealed I was amazed.
I will definitely be reading more about these characters

I stumbled across this book at the perfect time
I have been trying to embrace retirement for more than 10 years. Currently I’m working at my third career. I will be turning 68 in December.
Listening to this book has given me a sense of peace in that I’m exactly where I need and ‘planned’ to be and I’m most thankful. I felt I was an anomaly because I haven’t been able to easily adapt to retirement or adapt to what I thought retirement would be.
However, this book gave me a clearer perspective on what I want my retirement to actually look like.
Knowing “I’ve made a clear contract “with those that I’ve previously encountered and those I’ve yet to meet .

Story
After the loss of his parents, young Jack Thatch first met Stella as a child - this cryptic little girl of eight with dark hair and darker eyes, sitting alone on a bench in the cemetery clutching her favorite book. The body of a man found in an alley, every inch of his flesh horribly burned, yet his clothing completely untouched. For Detective Faustino Brier, this wasn't the first, and he knew it wouldn't be the last. Isolated and locked away from the world in a shadowy lab, a little boy known only as Subject "D" waits, grows, learns. He's permitted to speak to no one.
