I have just fallen in love with the nate shepherd character in these stories. his matter of fact manner, but also his apparent warmth and compassion for those he is defending, just ring true and don't seem contrived in any way. I also really appreciate the family dynamics- How much nate cares for his family and interacts with them. I also feel I have a much greater understanding of how court systems work as we proceed through the trials of the murder cases. the author's understanding of trial work and defense and his way of wrapping up the cases with things that we didn't understand before until the very end keeps me on edge,. Also, interesting is the way the character will talk to us throughout the book. Explain things to us by addressing us directly. all in all, i'm just really enjoying these stories and look forward to reading more.

This is probably the worst novel by this author that I've read
At times it was so ridiculous that I almost quit listening to it.
Grown women as attorneys do not act like the characters in this particular story.
Though the storyline could have been compelling because of the stalking And the main character being presumed as dead but not, that part of the story really wasn't drawn out very effectively. I also did not care for the narration. I can't really explain what I didn't care for about it, but I just didn't feel like the inflections were very good. I just did not like the voice. In the past, i've enjoyed Benny Rossetti stories and the characters in that law firm, but this was not one of those.

I like that the story was told in the first person. The characters are written as such, that you could picture them and their mannerisms. The story was told in such a way that it just kept me intrigued and really wanting to hear more, like a good book that you just can't put down.

The narrator did an excellent job with the voices. The man's voice really could be believed to be a man, and the little kid's voice was really great. The story was interesting and fun to follow along with, but Like her first book the likelihood of finding an available handsome man out in the alaskan wilderness and having it be love at first sight and everything working out beautifully is just pie in the sky romance. There was enough danger and suspense to keep me reading; I wasn't inclined to put it down.
But The lead male character with his ever so wonderful, romantic talk and burning desire to be with this woman that he just met while he's working a case.
It's just somewhat unbelievable. men just don't talk like that, at least that's not been my experience, perhaps I just had never found the right man! Perhaps I should go to Alaska.

intriguing story and characters
Reviewed: 04-29-22
the story was interesting and drew me in to figure out what was the deceptive mysterious goings on at the "farm". The thing that ruined the story for me was the narrator. Her tone was always breathless. No matter who was speaking or what the situation was her voice is one that just always sounds like it's breathless. And her male voices were really quite awful. I very often could not tell who was talking because they all sounded alike and none of them sounded good. The plot is reminiscent of the David Baldacci series with Atlee Pine With a strong female character now in law enforcement who has a tragic past. However it's intriguing enough for me to go ahead and move on to the next book in the series.

I'm not much of a book reviewer, primarily listening at night to putme to sleep. that said, I got hooked on this story and couldn't stop listening , just to see what was going to happen there was some predictability to it, but still enough "edge of your seat " drama to keep me listening. my only complaint was with the narrator. her voice for the daughterwas.lower pitched than the mothers, making the daughter sound older. I especially liked the courtroom drama. the author obviously researched law. all in all, an enjoyable read.

good story, narration not so good

this book would have been tremendously improved by having acquired more narrators to read the different roles. Dennis Quaid though you may love him as an actor he just should not have to do six or seven different speakers because they all start to sound alike and they start to sound not very realistic at all. Love the story very much appreciated the last chapter wishing everybody every politician would read it. But next time consider hiring narrators to read the different parts.

I enjoyed it. I appreciated the different narratives rather than one voice trying to make it sound different for every character. the story was interesting though a bit unbelievable in parts, but these days who knows? maybe stuff like this really happens. all in all it won't win a Nobel prize for literature but it's an entertaining read.
