Crais does not disappoint
Reviewed: 01-20-25
During the first part of the audiobook, I was afraid it was a bit too flippant and the story would be weak. I like the narrator, but his Elvis seemed more campy than usual. After the first quarter or so, concern disappeared. And the narrator faded behind the gripping story, which delivered emotional gut punches through the end with the greater development of complex characters.
The worst thing about Cole/Pike stories is the wait in between their publication.

Exceeded expectations
Reviewed: 12-06-24
I am very picky about mysteries/thrillers and have run through all books of all my favorite authors (John Sandford, Michael Connelly, Robert Crais, Greg Hurwitz…), so I was looking for something new. This is a very well plotted story – like a very long-term chess game. Intriguing, well paced, good characters, and terrific narrator. Not able to guess the ending early, satisfying. Only disappointment is finding out this is her first adult novel, and there aren’t a string of others for me to run through.

My name is Mercy Thompson Hauptman, and my mate, Adam, is the werewolf who leads the Columbia Basin Pack, the pack charged with keeping the people who live and work in the Tri-Cities of Washington State safe. It’s a hard job, and it doesn’t leave much room for side quests. Which is why when I needed to travel to Montana to help my brother, I intended to go by myself.

The structure of the story was a little bit different, with interludes from different times and from the perspective of different players. It was very well crafted and worked well for the story, which was as interesting and entertaining as usual, and really beautiful. As usual, Lorelei King’s narration just can’t be beat. If you like the Mercy Thompson series, binge this one, you won’t regret it.

I have run out of books to read from Sandford, Connelly, Kellerman, Crais, Hurwitz, Sheldon Siegel and even JD Robb. I can be very picky, so excited that this book exceeded my expectations. Really well done character driven story, not gimmicky, very smart on courtroom, perfect pacing, smart. Narration adds to a great experience. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Yes, I too miss Richard Ferrone, and so the narration took some adjustment, particularly (for me) on Virgil. More than anyone, through the Prey, Virgil and now Lettie series, the writing, plotting, character development and stories are reliable terrific. I am a bit unsure of the final ending… but I will always buy every Sandford writing.

I am very picky about courtroom/legal thrillers and stories. I have run out of Michael Connelly, John Sandford and a host of other authors. Good on the law, not too in the weeds or dry. Good characters and story. Excellent balance between character development, pacing, twists, nothing annoying or unnecessarily gory. Very good narration. I’m only disappointed that this is the only book by this author on audible.

The vampire Wulfe is missing. Since he’s deadly, possibly insane, and his current idea of “fun” is stalking me, some may see it as no great loss. But, warned that his disappearance might bring down the carefully constructed alliances that keep our pack safe, my mate and I must find Wulfe—and hope he’s still alive. As alive as a vampire can be, anyway.

On the right side of the law. Sort of. Sebastian Rudd is not your typical street lawyer. He works out of a customized bulletproof van, complete with Wi-Fi, a bar, a small fridge, fine leather chairs, a hidden gun compartment, and a heavily armed driver. He has no firm, no partners, no associates, and only one employee: his driver, who's also his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddy.

First SRG book I have not loved
Reviewed: 10-16-21
I am a huge fan of Simon R Green and have read and re-read the Nightside series, the Secret Histories, the Deathstalker series, the Ghosthunters, the Ishmael Jones series, the standalones, etc. also love the narration of Gildart. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get even halfway through this book. I found it to be missing the trademark humor and the magic and ethos of all of his others. Perhaps it was the necessary violence of the subject matter, that for some reason here came across differently and without the same heart or soul of his other writings, but I found myself wondering if someone else wrote this one under his name. Sorry to feel this way; I thought I would never meet a Simon R Green book I did not love, but this is it.
