2021 Reader Views Gold Medal winner and 2020 IAN Book of the Year Finalist for horror

An estranged son drives twelve hours to collect badly needed money from his father’s estate. The same ugly McMansion still sits behind a security wall, but there are new features: a gaudy slate roof, a 70s-style conversation pit, and nearly two dozen statues posted along the wall like sentries. It makes no sense; Billy Buchanan’s father was broke. Where had these fierce-looking valuable sculptures come from? Forced to spend the week at 22 Dutch Road, Billy begins believing these samurai-styled carvings can talk to him by day, and worse, move at night; his father might not be so dead after all.

Empowering and Educational

This audiobook was both empowering and educational. It covers bipolar disorder comprehensively, from its historical roots to modern-day treatment options. The focus on self-advocacy and acceptance was particularly empowering. The real-life stories made the information come alive and provided hope that managing this condition is possible.

Unforgettable and Disturbing

I couldn’t put this book down! The story of Billy and the haunted house at 22 Dutch Road is deeply disturbing. The concept of the statues coming to life is brilliantly executed, making you question what’s real and what’s in Billy’s mind. An absolute page-turner!

Action and Horror

Billy Buchanan receives word that his father has passed leaving him an inheritance with a stipulation. Desperate for the funds, Billy agrees to the stipulations and arrives at the estate. Since his last venture there, Billy notices about a dozen larger-than-life menacing statues and an outdated conversation pit have been added among a few other items. Building a friendship with the elderly senile neighbor next door, Billy manages to make it to the end of the required stay. What Billy did not bank on was the consequences of completing his selfish and conniving father’s last wishes. Billy discovers the hidden agenda, resulting in a fight for his life, soul, body, and mind!

The author, T. C. Schueler, weaves an intense, frightening around the fears one finds in everyday life and blends it with a supernatural piece. He accurately describes the presence of dementia in the neighbor’s behavior, concerns for one’s mental health, the fear of being homeless, failing one’s parent or romantic interest, and the fear of the unknown. His use of dialogue captures and projects these fears accurately and vividly. He gives his audience vivid pictures and thorough descriptions regarding situations and characters! Schuele keeps his audience on the edge of their chairs til the end with each new plot twist.

The narrator, Daniel C-M Ryder delivers a solid performance. He speaks clearly and with a level of energy needed to keep the story moving forward. His subtle voice changes help to better focus the listener on the storyline and keep the characters straight. His delivery was well-timed and steady.

Overall, this is a great story tinged with action and horror! Highly recommend.
