Publisher's summary

In a world where male children are rare, a man is a valuable commodity - to be sold to the highest bidder....

It isn't easy being the oldest boy in a house run by women - especially for Jerin Whistler. The grand-matriarchs of his clan are descended from soldiers, spies, and thieves. That's partly what's kept their family alive in the wilderness. But it also means Jerin's doomed to marry the girls next door - a fate he's convinced is worse than death. But Jerin gets in even worse trouble when, in the process of a daring rescue, he falls in love with a royal princess who's as high above his station as it's possible to be.

Ren knows that Jerin is too far below her class to be an appropriate match for her and her royal sisters. But then she hears rumors of a long-held Whistler family secret - one that might provide a way for them to finally be together. Unfortunately, she still has four sisters to convince. And that's before Jerin even comes to the capital - where simmering political tensions will threaten not just their love, but all their lives....

Very entertaining read.

I read this book years ago when first published. I enjoy being able to relax and let someone else read to me. I did not care for the narrators reading of the book. I think this was my failing since I've read this story so often and imagined the characters voices for myself.

So wonderful and fun

Such a fun and well thought out story!!! I love it! The narrator did a fantastic job giving the men the innocents they needed while giving the woman the fire they had! Wondering through and through!

A great story full of cognitive dissidence for me.

A great story full of cognitive dissidence for me. Men are still physically strong, but almost disastrously underrepresented in the population.

Interesting and entertaining

I absolutely love the Whistlers. Travis Baldree is an amazing narrator. He brought the story to life by giving it emotion and depth. I loved every minute of this book.

I really liked it

I liked the exploration of gender role reversal.

However, in three cases there were some words that when mentioned were hard to understand.

But overall I found it and enjoyable read

An Old Favorite

I was charmed by this story years ago and was excited to have it in audio form.

Is it essentially a roman novel?

Yes. Yes it is.

However, the world-building and social ramifications of the society's structure is so well done and layered, it would be foolish to skip it just on that account. It's a well-written, well-plotted story with one of the more interesting world's I have had the pleasure to explore.

As an audiobook, the choices made by the narrartor for voice and accent were quite well done. I enjoyed the narration well, even, after a bit forgetting that I was listening to a book I'd read many times. So, well done narrator as well. I think a narrator that makes you forget someone is telling you a story and allows you to be immersed is probably the best job a narrator can do!

A different viewpoint.

Excellent story, well thought out and written. The narration could not have been done better.
I have only one issue. The deal is the women have to have been a whole lot larger than the men. Otherwise most of the book would not work.
That being said its Steam Punk genre and the roles are well done!

Classic Wen Spencer

Flame haired royalty, beautiful men with long black hair. Ingenious escapes.

Set in an alternate old west where men make up about 1/20 of the population, they are cared for and pampered. No one expects a boy of almost marrying age to be able to do anything useful.

Great Early Wen Spencer

Based in a world where many girls are born for every boy, traditional role models are reversed. Wen shows her ability to create a believable situation using the conversations and feelings of her characters. Definitely a winner
