About this listen

July 1831. It's been 15 years since Sebastian Gage has set foot in Langstone Manor. Though he has shared little with his wife, Lady Kiera Darby, about his past, she knows that he planned never to return to the place of so many unhappy childhood memories. But when an urgent letter from his grandfather reaches them in Dublin, Ireland, and begs Gage to visit, Kiera convinces him to go.

All is not well at Langstone Manor. Gage's grandfather, the Viscount Tavistock, is gravely ill, and Gage's cousin Alfred has suddenly vanished. He wandered out into the moors and never returned. The viscount is convinced someone or something other than the natural hazards of the moors is to blame for Alfred's disappearance. And when Alfred's brother Rory goes missing, Kiera and Gage must concede he may be right. Now, they must face the ghosts of Gage's past, discover the truth behind the local superstitions, and see beyond the tricks being played by their very own eyes to expose what has happened to Gage's family before the moors claim yet another victim....

Critic reviews

"A missing heir, an estranged family, and a possible poisoner add up to a pretty puzzle for two far-from-disinterested sleuths.... Huber draws on the beauties and dangers of the mysterious moorlands to provide a fitting setting for a knotty mystery filled with envy, greed, and thwarted love.” (Kirkus)

wrongful assumptions

Another excellent addition to the Lady Darby series. Always filled with strong supporting characters, descriptions of period fashions and surroundings. Great storyline with good narration. Our illustrious couple Gage and Kiera find their find their trip cut short by an urgent letter from Gage's father asking him to return to the place that he vowed never to return to. Gage's cousin Alfred, the Tavistock heir, has gone missing. Gage's grandfather Viscount Tavistock wants Gage to come and find his cousin. There is talk of a family curse, previous suspicious deaths and then Alfred' s brother Rory goes missing also. This inquiry is filled with family emotions, superstitions, possible ghost, poisonings and secret passageways. A great read as usual.

Step back into time to move a mystery

I always enjoy Lady Darby mysteries. Keira and Gage do it again. Love the twists and turns to figure out who did it. Ghost is shadows or is a the mist or people. I like Kiera's maid Bree. Can't wait to read the next one.

Can’t get enough!

This series is well written, believable, has interesting characters and is well narrated. I always feel as if I have received my money’s worth! I hope Ms. Huber writes 20 more (as long as Ms. Wilds narrates them).

I love the characters! Love the storyline! Engaging!

I want to finish the series, but the thoughts of listening to the same narration is painful! It is so distracting I have to go back and listen to the story over the singsong repetitive timber and rhythm! So sad it is such a distraction from such a good author!

Good story-narration is irritating and monotonous.

These stories are wonderful. I love the series. Unfortunately Heather Wilds is the narrator. She is monotone and has an annoying habit of ending each sentence on a high note. Most of the time I get used to her cadence and she gets a bit better as the story goes on. However, in this book, it never got better. Her narration is great to fall asleep to. The book is still well worth listening to, but suffers from the narration.

just raise the voice speed

From the very beginning of the series, so many people wouldn't give this series a chance because of the narrator. But by speeding up the voice I've happily been able to enjoy the series! the book particularly was wonderful! I loved the growing trust between Kiera and Gage as she helps him cope with his strange family dynamic. one of my favorite books out of the series so far. excited for the next book!

Good Mystery

A Brush with Shadows is a good mystery, taking up when Kiera and Gage are on their honeymoon. They cut it short when Gage gets a missive from his maternal grandfather asking him to come to the family home, for his cousin and grandfather’s heir is missing. As Kiera and Sebastian investigate, we learn a lot about Sebastian’s childhood and his difficult family. The family history revealing itself is the more interesting part of the book, which is very atmospheric taking place on the moors. It wasn’t very hard to figure out who the culprit is. I listened to the audiobook, which was well done with a good narrator. Looking forward to the next book.

Love this series.

I have loved every moment of this series and I love it even more as an audiobook. The performance is brilliant and helps to alleviate the tediousness of what can be, in my mind, some unnecessary description (although that was far less prevalent in this book than in others). I always enjoy starting a series from the beginning, but I think you will truly enjoy this one if this is your first introduction to Lady Darby.
