About this listen

The wake of war leaves marks that don’t always look dramatic from the outside.

Inside, a tempest of trauma rages. Consumed by darkness and depression in the aftermath of war, Ewa Reid-Hammer’s story is the journey of a terrified child’s transformation to adulthood. With reflections on the emotional wounds left not only on herself, but those close to her, Reid-Hammer’s account depicts the complexities of survival and self-recovery in the face of distress.

From horror to healing, her story reveals the truth of what it is to be a child of war.

Riveting true life drama

"A Child of War" is both an adventure story that keeps you on the edge of your seat, as well as a psychological study of the lifetime scars that the trauma of war creates.
My experience as a psychologist who works with trauma helped me to especially value this book, because it takes the reader through the experience of the child facing the devastation of war, into the world of the adult struggling with the inevitable PTSD that continues through the life span. How Eva Hammer came to terms with her early experiences of pain and loss to create a life of meaning and value is a beautiful example of healing from PTSD. I highly recommend this book to all those whose lives are touched by trauma as well as to mental health professionals working with trauma in their clients. It is also a great read for those looking to understand some of the cultural ramifications of Polish postwar emigration, or just looking for a good true life adventure story!
