Very special classics

Derek Perkins kept me spellbound throughout his performance of A Christmas Carol. He has a perfect voice for audiobooks, making each character unique and special. I have loved this book all my life. Charles Dickens was a brilliant writer.
Alison Larkin's beautiful voice captured The Night Before Christmas perfectly. I have always loved this story and read it to my children every Christmas. It was nice to hear a little background about both of these stories.

A WONDERFUL holiday recording of two great classic

Would you listen to A Christmas Carol and The Night Before Christmas again? Why?

Oh yes! It was delightful - such a treat - to hear my two favorite Christmas stories in the same recording! And read so beautifully with very interesting commentary in between.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Christmas Carol and The Night Before Christmas?

The moment when Scrooge wakes up and realizes it is not too late!

What does Derek Perkins and Alison Larkin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

These are two A list narrators - the very best - at the top of their game. Both Mr Perkins and Mis Larkin have a gift for bringing out the author's voice through their own. They do it again here - with two of the greatest texts ever written. I was so happy to hear Derek Perkins reading this - he is SO GOOD. I loved Alison Larkin's narrations of Jane Austen and Lewis Carroll 's novels, which was how I found this. The combination of these two voices makes for a really top notch recording.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

It was so interesting listening to the short commentary by Alison Larkin in between the tales, linking the two stories in a very interesting way. I won't spoil it - but it's really fascinating!

A Christmas Carol and The Night Before Christmas

A Christmas Carol and The Night Before Christmas
: Charles Dickens, Clement Clarke Moore

A Christmas Carol has been a favorite story of mine for many, many years. I also like The Night before Christmas. My Christmas Season can now begin! I will be listening to this over and over!!!!!

The short narration in between the two stories was enlightening with information that I didn't previously know. That added just a little more excitement for me.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed by Derek Perkins and Alison Larkin

This is an enjoyable listen and it was free from Audible.

Impressive Acting Classic Christmas Tales!

Where does A Christmas Carol and The Night Before Christmas rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The top of the Classics performances in my library! I don't have enough superlatives!

What did you like best about this story?

The well known and beloved Dickens' story and the equally impressive Clement Moore tale. Top off by unequaled performances.

Which character – as performed by Derek Perkins and Alison Larkin – was your favorite?

Derek Perkins nailed each of the characters- Scrooge, the ghosts, Marley, Bob Cratchet and Tiny Tim. Alison Larkin's enthusiastic performance was amazing on The Night Before Christmas.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Gee, that's a tough one...

"Miserly Days and Penny Pinching Nights".

"No More Bubble and Squeak before Bedtime".

Any additional comments?

Loved the voice of Scrooge, a great version

Would you consider the audio edition of A Christmas Carol and The Night Before Christmas to be better than the print version?

Um - hard to answer. Dickens himself read regularly from his work, and it works nicely when listened to. I think it stands up well to the print version, it brings the characters to life with excellent narrators.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Christmas Carol and The Night Before Christmas?

When the famous lines are spoken "are there no workhouses?", or when Scrooge has his epiphany and seems mad to the world ordering large turkeys and giving away his money.

What about Derek Perkins and Alison Larkin ’s performance did you like?

Enthusiasm, clear voices.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have liked to (shame I had to go to work!), and length wise, at 3 hours, it isn't impossible to.

Any additional comments?

My review from Amazon/Goodreads:

The most famous of all Christmas stories... The one that gave us Christmas as we know it.

You forget how short it is, but it's all so familiar - the scenes, the lines, the characters. I was offered an audio copy to listen to, and thought it a good time of year to revisit the Dickens classic.

Read with clear and energetic voice, this characterises the miserly old man brilliantly, and Dickens' wonderful ebullient language never fails to impress, his asides, his social commentary, the dark heart of his story about living with 'Christmas' in your heart and more importantly connecting with your fellow man a lifelong message for one and all.

Included is a reading of 'The Night Before Christmas', the unabridged poem, and between them a short annotation by Larkin (the poem's reader) discussing the two Christmas-themed famous works. It's quite interesting and I would have liked it to be longer!

Enjoyed my listen, it took just a few car journeys, will probably revisit them both annually.

With thanks to Alison Larkin and Audiobookblast for providing a sample copy, for review purposes.
