The holiday film A Christmas Story, first released in 1983, has become a bona fide Christmas perennial, gaining in stature and fame with each succeeding year. Its affectionate, wacky, and wryly realistic portrayal of an American family's typical Christmas joys and travails in small-town Depression-era Indiana has entered our imagination and our hearts with a force equal to It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street.

Story
First published in 1869, Little Women is the story of four sisters growing up against the background of the American Civil War. Alcott wrote the book at the urging of the publisher, Thomas Niles, who was seeking a story about girls that would have popular appeal. Although it was commenced essentially as a children's book, it developed into something of a bildungsroman, which touches on more serious issues such as the difficulties faced by single-parent families, the death of a sibling, and fractured relationships.

Throughout the novel, Emily shows that she is a girl with a love for the beauty and nature and art, loyalty and her friends, a thirst for knowledge, and a passionate dedication to her writing.

A country girl named Polly is visiting city friends and comes to realize that this world is quite different than which she has left. Here people are judged according to their dress and manner of speech rather than for their honesty and hard work. Yet all who meet Polly cannot help but be enamored of her; her sweet simplicity is unlike any that they have ever seen, and soon everyone comes to realize that Polly is not someone to be laughed at and ridiculed, but someone to put upon a pedestal for failing to become willing prey to the cynicism of the times.

Story
A Dickens short written specifically for Christmas, "The Cricket on the Hearth" beautifully combines Dickens' masterful critique of social ills with a typically captivating narrative. In the Peerybingle family house, a cricket constantly chips, and acts as their guardian angel. Then, one day, a mysterious, elderly stranger takes lodge with the family. Complete and unabridged, this is a must-buy for Christmas, and will bring to your family the festive cheer and seasonal warmth only Dickens could provide.

Story
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

A member of the landed gentry, with a seemingly guaranteed income from his estate in the country, Oblomov lives in Petersburg, uninterested in the business that provides his living and barely aware that the revenue is diminishing. Not that he leads a dissolute life of extravagance, balls and entertainment. Instead he is a dreamer, a sybarite, content above all to spend most of the day supine, in bed. The novel opens with Oblomov thus ensconced, attended only by his dirty, grumbling, indolent servant Zahar, who has looked after him since childhood, catering to his every need.

In 1697, Quebec is an island of French civilization perched on a bare gray rock amid a wilderness of trackless forests. For many of its settlers, Quebec is a place of exile, so remote that an entire winter passes without a word from home. But to 12-year-old Cécile Auclair, the rock is home, where even the formidable Governor Frontenac entertains children in his palace and beavers lie beside the lambs in a Christmas créche.

In 1860 the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow family celebrated Christmas at Craigie House, their home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The publication of Longfellow's classic Revolutionary War poem, "Paul Revere's Ride", was less than a month hence, and the country's grave political unrest weighed heavily on his mind. Yet with his beloved wife, Fanny, and their five adored children at his side, the delights of the season prevailed.

With their heart, humor and good morals, Dickens' Christmas stories have made the author's name synonymous with the season. Here we present four charming novellas to complete his series that began with "A Christmas Carol", with echoes of sleigh bells throughout. The stories include "The Chimes", "The Cricket on the Hearth", "The Battle of Life", and "The Haunted Man" - the perfect companion for the yearly celebrations.

Uplifting holiday collection
A nice collection of lovely Christmas stories and poems that are generally not familiar. My favorite was the letter by Mark Twain (Santa Claus!) to his children. The recording would have been much improved by giving the authors and titles in the the chapter list instead of just “chapter 1, chapter 2, etc”. It would allow the listener to keep track of the authors and titles they are listening to and also be a convenient reference for going back to individual stories to listen again. (I also have the Christmas Classics collection which does include that and is very helpful). Overall it’s a good listen to put you in a good Christmas spirit.

A cluster of gems
I had seen the title over and again for a few years, but he hesitated to buy it because of its length. I prefer to get a little more contacts for my credits.
After sifting through several Christmas titles, I decided to spend the credit. I wish I had done so several years ago.
I am skeptical of anthologies, because inevitably you got a few duds along with quality stories. That is not the case here. Every single story was worth listening to and some were truly terrific. What's ,more, most of these are not the classics. There are a few that were duplicated in other books that I own, but most of them were new to me. The book is narrated by a cast and every narrator has a great reading style.
If I had one criticism, it would be this: There is some really great poetry along with the stories, but they’re all at the end. If I was the editor, I would’ve mixed them in throughout.
Also, if your budget, conscious, this title does come on sell from time to time. You might consider waiting till it’s on sale and grabbing it then. You will not regret it!

Great selection of Christmas stories, well performed
I was looking for just a little more Christmas following Christmas, and this collection of stories and poems fit the bill. Most of the poems were familiar (but welcome!), but many of the stories I had not heard before. I was very pleased. (A small quibble is that I would have liked the chapters indexed as something more useful than “Chapter 1”.)

Interesting not great. I tend to shift holiday listening in December. Really don't know if this was a plus catalog or a sale item. I wouldn't recommend spending too much on it but worth the time.
As one review I saw mentioned would have been nice for table of contents to give titles/ authors of the various pieces in collection
