Editorial reviews

Narrator Daniel Thomas May gives an animated performance of this collection of Christmas stories beloved by children. Giving each tale its own style of narration, May's lively voice rises and falls with drama and easily holds the listener's attention.

Listeners will find themselves moved by the sentimentality brimming in quite a few of the stories, from the fir tree's sad fate in The Fir-Tree to the little star's search for someone with whom to share his light in The Christmas Star. Other stories are filled with humor, and a few have lessons on Christian morality, but all are infused with the Christmas spirit.

Good, but not great

I am a big Christmas bug. One of my yearly rituals is that I listen to its of Christmas short stories.

When I saw this title, I thought I would pick it up and add it to my library.

I listened to the entire book, which is an indication that I must’ve at least liked it a bit. If I don’t like something, I don’t finish it.

At the same time, this is just not one of my favorite titles. The stories are a little humdrum, rarely super Christmasy and while they were nice, they didn’t really put me in the Christmas mood.

Mostly good choices; a few weird ones

Despite the Cratchits’ Dinner (from A Christmas Carol) appearing twice in here — first in a tighter abridged form and, a few chapters later, with the Ghost of Christmas Present, um, present — and a few odd choices that seem included more for atmosphere than any literary merit, this is an enjoyable listen in the days leading to (and in my case, the days following) Christmas Day.
