About this listen

Adair Radcliffe is only a child when her family perishes in the War of the Roses, so her real father, the womanizing King Edward IV, takes her in, honoring his promise to her mother. Once Adair turns 16, the king marries her off without her knowledge - and to her later outrage - in a wedding by proxy. But when tragedy leaves her a widow twice over, Adair realizes that her already tenuous social position has sunk even lower. Now, all she can do is hope that the Scottish laird to whom she is sold will have mercy on her. But little does master or servant suspect that love knows no rank.

Contains mature themes.

This story was so emotional with sadness that made me cry! But I loved that the writer had the main character as a strong woman unlike some writers make them weak & stupid.

Heart stirring

Excellent narrator, full of historical facts and a pretty strong lead, this book was an enjoyable read through centuries old England and Scotland. Great depth of details and amusing “honeylove” nicknames! A few unexpected moments kept the listener engaged!

Cheesy, but most entertaining!

The narrator always does an excellent job, love the voices and the characters in the enthusiasm, and how she brings each character to life

Strength and passion

I enjoyed the book and the narration. I thought the first couple of chapters were a bit confusing with all the different historical characters. I do know who they are, being I’m a history buff, but thought it was unnecessary. Loved the middle and end with the Scotsman!

I want a boarder Scotsman

Liked the realism of the treachery the royalty inflicted on each other & their subjects, didn’t like what they did during the struggles for power. But this book was able to work some beautiful love stories during using history as the backdrop.

THOROUGHLY ENJOYED

This is probably my favorite of the border ladies series. The overall story is good, but her history is flawed. Richard of Gloucester was a tyrant who did away with his nephews to seize power. His hatred of the Woodvilles was his driving force. Her glorification of him is, well, misguided. That being said, I love Adair. Ballsy, brave, smart lady. Overall, a good romance that takes artistic licence with the history.

Good story

I liked the story. It was a long book and some of the book seemed repetitive, but I enjoyed the vague tellings of King James and Edward IV. I think that the love story was good. Just surprised that a female character was allowed to be talkative and allowed to give her opinion about things such as war a politics. I just find it hard to believe that this was so freely acceptable in the 1400s.

This was a good story

This book was like reading a few books all into 1. The lead female is refreshing she is very smart and confident and delightful the whole story. The book was interesting and there as always something happening and the story was constantly progressing. In the passion department, it takes a while to get there but you are rewarded when it finally does. The steamy scenes fit the story well and are appropriate for this type of story. (I have read better ones with more foreplay but in another genre). The writer is excellent in my opinion as the story has an abundance of great characters, plots, romance, tragedy (but doesn't linger too long).
I recommend this book.
The narrator was good. She did a great job and was consistent. I listened to it at 1.2x speed and it worked out well for me.

Full storyline with good characters.
