Discover the untold story of Captain James Hook. A man whose name has been synonymous with villainy and vengeance for generations. The legendary pirate who would become Peter Pan's greatest nemesis.
Long before he was the notorious Captain Hook, James was a fearless young man, with nothing to lose. Plagued by an unquenchable thirst for revenge, he becomes entangled with the nefarious Blackbeard and his merciless crew. Together, they embark on a treacherous journey through perilous waters, where loyalty is a fickle currency, and danger lurks behind every wave. It is here, amidst the lawless seas, that his transformation into a formidable pirate begins.
Amidst the chaos of life on the high sea, James encounters a bewitching young woman who possesses powers that both intrigue and terrify him. As their worlds collide, he is drawn into a web of secrets, alchemy, and emotions he never thought possible.
As James’ obsession with Pan deepens, and his vendetta becomes an all-consuming mission, he must navigate the treacherous waters of love, revenge, and his own inner demons. In this spellbinding addition to the beloved Neverland Chronicles, A Decent in to Darkness: A Neverland Chronicles Saga explores the complex journey of a man who would ultimately be branded a villain, revealing the depths of his humanity, the allure of darkness, and the price of vengeance.
Will love be his salvation or his ultimate undoing? This gripping tale of love and villainy will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about the man behind the hook.

The story is a very interesting take on Captain Hook and his background. I know that as children we're supposed to see him as the bad guy of the Peter Pan story, but looking at his history and the experiences that may have led him to become that pirate captain that we know, is fascinating. The world that T.S. Kinley creates, and the story that is woven together, kept my attention and left me wanting more.
The idea of a rejected Lost Boy looking for revenge while finding both adventure and tragic love, along with the trauma of both what is written and implied of his childhood growing up at sea, and a bit of magic sprinkled in, really "hooked" me. There is some spice, and some scenes may be triggering to certain audiences, but everything did add to the story and wasn't just there as a novelty.
The story does end in a cliffhanger, and I definitely can't wait to see what happens next.

The story itself had some interesting bones. It’s a short book so the amount of time that it covered seemed at odds with how little we saw of the relationship. The writing was good, I just needed more of it! I would’ve liked seeing more of the relationship developing.
All that being said - that cliffhanger!
Interesting Retelling!

This is performed in duet narration which was so immersive and exciting. I loved the narrators. They played the part of their characters perfectly and with tons of passion.
I love how Captain James Hook is most definitely the villain but in this story, he gets to be a somewhat hero of Catherine’s story. Especially as a child I always had the perspective that Hook was the “bad guy” but this redeemed him in my eyes. I give the story 3.5 stars because it did seem baseline at times and lacked a ton of depth. But the length of the book is short so that could be why it wasn’t poured into heavily!
Either way, I will definitely be listening to the next book in the series because that cliffhanger was fantastic and it left me wanting more.
This narration is fantastic!!

This was a fantastic Captain Hook retelling! James’ story is fast-paced with a fresh, compelling take on how Hook came to be.
I listened to the audiobook, and the duet narration was spot on! James & Jacci completely transport you into this world. James’ gritty voice and accent bring all the pirate vibes, while Jacci’s ability to give each character a unique twist is truly impressive.
And that cliffhanger? It got me good—I’ll definitely be diving into Book 2!
Loved it!
