About this listen

A New York Times Bestseller

“A smart, edge-of-your-seat story with plot twists you’ll never see coming. Stacy Willingham’s debut will keep you turning pages long past your bedtime.” —Karin Slaughter

When Chloe Davis was twelve, six teenage girls went missing in her small Louisiana town. By the end of the summer, her own father had confessed to the crimes and was put away for life, leaving Chloe and the rest of her family to grapple with the truth and try to move forward while dealing with the aftermath.

Now twenty years later, Chloe is a psychologist in Baton Rouge and getting ready for her wedding. While she finally has a fragile grasp on the happiness she’s worked so hard to achieve, she sometimes feels as out of control of her own life as the troubled teens who are her patients. So when a local teenage girl goes missing, and then another, that terrifying summer comes crashing back. Is she paranoid, seeing parallels from her past that aren't actually there, or for the second time in her life, is Chloe about to unmask a killer?

From debut author Stacy Willingham comes a masterfully done, lyrical thriller, certain to be the launch of an amazing career. A Flicker in the Dark is eerily compelling to the very last page.

Chloe is a successful psychologist in Louisiana with a dark past, her father is a convicted serial killer. As her wedding approaches there is news of a local girl who went missing. She was later found dead. Then another. Chloe is haunted daily by her past and the incredible similarities these murders hold to those perpetrated by her father. Chloe struggles to figure out what is happening around her as she wrestled with her demons from the past. I did not see the ending coming. Beautifully written, incredibly dark, and very atmospheric, this book will leave you feeling Chloe’s every fear as she navigates past and present.

What a dark and stunning debut!

I figured out the “twist” after the first chapter. The book is very predictable and the main character is not very likable or sympathetic.

Predictable

Sometimes it’s engaging. Sometimes it’s far fetched. Sometimes I like it. Sometimes I’m rolling my eyes. Meh.

It’s A Lot

This book was great! It had me entertained from start to finish. A lot of suspense at the end. Loved it!

Suspenseful read

The performance is good, and I think the story is well written, however my only draw back in this book is how PAINFULLY weak the main character is. For the second half of the book I was cringing at how the PhD main character is such a victim in her own life.

Mildly Entertaining

Phenomenal. She even got the ending. Terrific thriller//mystery. Highly recommend!! And I can be a very harsh critic, I listen to a lot of these!!

Wow! What a debut!

Okay, so some reviews say
"I knew who it was right away!"
Well, I didn't. In fact, the ending came as a total shock for me. There was an audible *gasp* when it was finally revealed who was behind it all, then the pieces all came together, like the fog lifting from the earth or the sunlight peaking through the clouds on a rainy day.

The narrator was one of the BEST ones I've heard in forever and she did animated the different voices in an amazing voice. Your body, or at least mine, filled with the emotions that she was trying to convey through each spoken word. When fear was the emotion the author wanted to convey, the narrator's voice and production pricked your skin with goosebumps and raised hairs. When sadness was meant to be felt, the tears filled my eyes and stained my cheeks. It's super hard to find a narrator that can not only convey the message, but to bring both the female AND the male characters to life, giving them all a voice of their own. I couldn't have listened without a good narrator and in my own personal opinion, this is one of THE BEST.

The author did an EXCELLENT job in writing a story that immersed the reader (or listener 😉) into the life and mind of Chloe Davis. The detail wasn't too overbearing. It didn't feel at all like "filler". It was a perfect balance and I couldn't wait to hear more. I found myself DREAMING of the book, my mind conjuring the possible scenarios that were yet to be uncovered. So many times I thought I knew the ending, but alas, so many times I was wrong.

This book puts you into the life and mind of a woman who struggles with trauma from her childhood and how it affects every aspect of her life today, 20 years after the incident took place. It acknowledges the demons that haunt our past and shows that no matter who you are, how far you've come, how successful you've come to be, and how far you try to run, the devil can be someone you least expect and your mind is a fragile thing that can confuse the possible from the impossible and that the truth can shatter the existence of the facade you've tried so hard to portray.

I can't wait for more novels from this author and I'll definitely be one of the first to pre-order her next big hit.

To the author:
thank you for taking the time to share what can come from a brilliantly creative mind. Some of us have the stories locked deep inside, but lack the ability or the courage to put our thoughts into words and etch them forever between two bookends. You've made your mark and I'm so glad you did. The ripples from the first stones throw go far and wide, reaching out to touch what may have once seemed impossible. I cant wait for your next masterpiece! Thank you for bringing Chloe Davis into this world and highlighting what the possibilities could be if we only opened our eyes to the truth that's staring right back at us 💜

To the future reader/listener:

If you're on the fence, I hope my review helps. This is an amazing novel brought to life through an amazing narrator. It will leave you feeling different than before it entered your life. At least it did for me. Take the chance and enter the world and mind of Chloe Davis. You'll be on the edge of your seat to the very end, which will also shock you to your very core and leave you with your jaw on the floor until the final word has been spoken.

The BEST book I've listened to in a loooong time!!
