About this listen

A New York Times Bestseller

“A smart, edge-of-your-seat story with plot twists you’ll never see coming. Stacy Willingham’s debut will keep you turning pages long past your bedtime.” —Karin Slaughter

When Chloe Davis was twelve, six teenage girls went missing in her small Louisiana town. By the end of the summer, her own father had confessed to the crimes and was put away for life, leaving Chloe and the rest of her family to grapple with the truth and try to move forward while dealing with the aftermath.

Now twenty years later, Chloe is a psychologist in Baton Rouge and getting ready for her wedding. While she finally has a fragile grasp on the happiness she’s worked so hard to achieve, she sometimes feels as out of control of her own life as the troubled teens who are her patients. So when a local teenage girl goes missing, and then another, that terrifying summer comes crashing back. Is she paranoid, seeing parallels from her past that aren't actually there, or for the second time in her life, is Chloe about to unmask a killer?

From debut author Stacy Willingham comes a masterfully done, lyrical thriller, certain to be the launch of an amazing career. A Flicker in the Dark is eerily compelling to the very last page.

lots of potential, but..

I liked the plot although sometimes predictable the twists and turns were good. The narrator is excellent.

What made me give 3 stars is the unfortunate stupidity of the main character. with a phD and masters in psychology no less! time and time again she out herself in dangerous situations despite her "knowledge" of the risk.

I can appreciate a flawed character having problems with prescription pills but it just made me dislike her more instead of having empathy.
like hey maybe my friend or neighbor or relative is a serial killer qwhy don't I pop a Xanax and meet him for drinks? Absurd

Maybe her next book will have a smarter albeit flawed protagonist.

Tough to get through

The narrator whisper talks through the whole book. It is so annoying. And the main character is also annoying so combine that with the narrator and it’s even worse. The story was interesting but I had a hard time getting through the book because of everything I said above.

Hoped for more

The main character came off as whiney and paranoid. I kept asking why after she did almost anything.

VERY Predictable - Spoilers

SPOILERS This is a very predictable book, especially if you’ve read her second book. Chloe drinks too much and is an addict. These are things I dont enjoy reading about in general so that doesn’t help. She whines. She second guesses. Constantly for both. And of course she cheats…with the killer. I had her brother pegged the minute we are introduced to him. And once she slept with Alex you knew for sure he was the killer. This book is average, nothing more. I’d recommend it if you’re on a long flight or laying on the beach, but not if you REALLY want a great book. (also, the narrator sounds strange when she tried male voices. Just read the words, no need for acting)

Yaowza!!

Stop what you’re doing right now and buy this book! Stop reading the book you’re listening to and start reading this book…Do It Now!!!
This book was so good it made me want to take stars away from the last book I reviewed.

The story was mesmerizing. It kept me guessing all the way through. The narration was good but not great all the male voices sounded pretty much the same.

This is such a perfect Beach Read!

Great mystery.

The story was compelling and kept me guessing. One thing that bothered me though was that it is set in the south, but the reader did not have an accent and it was in 1st person, so she should have had an accent as the main character was born and raised in Louisiana.

FireFly

At first the book started off so slow but I guess that’s what you call a “slow-burn” ? But that’s fine because when it picked up, I was hooked. I’ve been listening to this book for 8 hours straight and I loved it.

A fun listen but not much substance

This book kept me engaged but I knew the ending early on and then I was frustrated that it took the narrator so long to get there. Also the audiobook reader chose to make the character super whiny, and I know she'd been through trauma but she was very annoying.

It’s ok

The book itself is alright the breathy performance was unbearable. I forced myself to finish listening.
