About this listen

John Gierach is known for his witty, trenchant observations about fly-fishing. In A Fly Rod of Your Own, Gierach once again takes us into his world and scrutinizes the art of fly-fishing. He travels to remote fishing locations where the airport is not much bigger than a garage and a flight might be held up because a passenger is running late. He sings the praises of the skilled pilots who fly to remote fishing lodges in tricky locations and bad weather. He explains why even the most veteran fisherman seems to muff his cast whenever he's being filmed or photographed. He describes the all-but-impassable roads that fishermen always seem to encounter at the best fishing spots and why fishermen discuss four-wheel drive vehicles almost as passionately and frequently as they discuss fly rods and flies. And while he's on that subject, he explains why even the most conscientious fisherman always seems to accumulate more rods and flies than he could ever need.

From Alaska to the Rockies and across the continent to Maine and the Canadian Maritimes, A Fly Rod of Your Own is an ode to those who fish.

Critic reviews

"A must for fisherman and outdoor enthusiasts, this book may also have wider appeal, as it is as much about travel, friendships, and navigating today's world as it is about fly-fishing." ( Library Journal)

I'm not sure what it is about this book but it was definitely my #1 of the last couple years. Its not overly memorable but has a way of letting you feel like your next to the author through his experiences. Its comforting, relaxing, exciting, humurous, realistic and authentic. A fantasticand MUST read/listen for any fisherman!! For the beginner to the experienced this will hook you and drag you in! Also Tom Rosenbauer did a podcast with the author which is available on orvis.com.

the narrator has the matter-of-fact tone which usually works great for audio books, but here it misses the writer's wry sarcasm.

great book, flat delivery

Some new ones, all inspiring to me as a beginner fky fisherman and now “as long as I”m able” as JG shares.

Classic Gierach

It's obvious in the first chapter of this audio book that the person that recorded it was not a pro, and if they were, they shouldn't be. Kind of a bummer as I was really looking forward to this book.

Poor audio quality
