Publisher's summary

From the irrepressible author of Trout Bum and The View from Rat Lake comes an engaging, humorous, often profound examination of life's greatest mysteries: sex, death, and fly-fishing.

John Gierach's quest takes us from his quiet home water (an ordinary, run-of-the-mill trout stream where fly-fishing can be a casual affair) to Utah's famous Green River, and to unknown creeks throughout the Western states and Canada. We're introduced to a lively group of fishing buddies, some local "experts," and even an ex-girlfriend, along the way.

Contemplative, evocative, and wry, he shares insights on mayflies and men, fishing and sport, life and love, and the meaning (or meaninglessness) of it all.

I’m a bit upset it ended….

The delivery, and writing of this book combined, kinda makes you wish it never ends. Just like a good fishing trip.

Third John Gierach Book Didn’t Let Me Down

I am currently rly working my way through this authors entire collection of works that are offered in audio book format. This one is similar to the other two I have listened to already. A collection of stores that often run off on interesting rabbit trails only to circle back to the main bent of the chapter.

One thing that stood out to me was that the talent they contracted to do the reading has this “wise old man” voice…but in one of the last chapters of the book the author lets on that he’s 42 when he was penning down the words. So he wasn’t really “a wise old man” at the time the story was written.

The book is copyright 1990 as well. So if he was 42 then…then that means that here in 2022 he really is a “wise old man”.

With that in mind I like to think of these books as being read by the author who has decided in his old age to go back and read through all of his own works aloud before he wraps up a life of interesting experiences. That’s not really true…but it makes he listening have a little extra flavor to it.

Great book but

He forgot to mention the larches changing color when talking about the mountain west’s fall season. Not actually a knock, but people gotta know.

Comedic and philosophical

This audiobook is perfect for any fly fisher. It immerses you into deep thought about the sport of fly fishing and the journey you go through to land a fish while having strokes of comedic lines.

Another great listen

I found John’s books 3 weeks ago, this is my 3rd read. I enjoy them during the week while I am wishing I was out on the water. It’s becoming a little sad when I finish one of his books because I’m realizing I might just finish them all.

John always brings the real….

JG hasn’t written a bad book yet. He is always very honest and sprinkles in humor. This book is very funny.

Good book, narration iffy

Not crazy about the reader’s voice but the book was fantastic! I learned so much and laughed out loud several times!

good book, funny!

this was my first encounter with John Gs writing. he is hilarious and nails the art of fly fishing right on the head. the narrator while not the most exciting, is clear and concise. Im heading to the audible catalog to find and download my next book by this author
