About this listen

Discover the answer to life's most pressing problems through the joy of fly-fishing from master philosopher John Gierach.

Once again, John Gierach tells the world why the pastime of fly-fishing makes so much sense—except when it doesn't. In sparkling prose, with more than a touch of humor, he recalls the joys of landing that trout he's been watching for the last hour—and then losing an even fatter one a little later. Joy and frustration mix in Gierach's latest appreciation of the fly-fishing life as he takes us from his home waters on the Front Range of the Rockies in Colorado to fishing meccas all over North America. From fishing lodges in Alaska to memories of the local creek in the Midwest where he grew up, Gierach reminds us about the indispensability of the natural world around us.

For fly fishing stories, I enjoyed listening. Nothing exciting but close to the experience of listening to a veteran fisherman tell about their days on the river.

Nice listen!

Funny and truly relatable stories, great narration. Introspective look at why we pursue this odd sport of fly fishing.

Laughing at ourselves

Like all of his past works this book hits the mark with well told essays on life, writing, and fishing with friends. Another great narration by David Colacci as well. Looking forward to the next one already!!

Never disappoints

I'm not a fisherman, not even an outdoorsman. In fact I was a recluse addict for many years. I'm clean now and reading has become my drug. I found solace in Gierach s writing, it felt like I was right there on the river with him. He had a wonderful sense of humor and always made me laugh too. He helped me through some really rough times and eventually inspired me to try and get out there on the water myself so I found some friends and they're planning to take me out and show me the ropes soon. I wanted to write to John and tell him how much his writing helped and changed my life. But alas, as of yesterday, October 3rd, 2024, he's sadly no longer with us. My heart and soul goes out to all his friends and family and he will live on in all of us Gierach fans forever. If you've never read a Gierach book, do yourself a favor and give one a read. Then after that, read them all.

The chapters drag on and on and lost me enough times it just wasn’t worth completing the book. Not John’s best work by any stretch.

Very Disappointed
