About this listen

The small town of Bellamy Bay has its share of skeletons in its closet, but it isn't used to bodies turning up in the local history museum. After all, this Coastal North Carolina town is much like any other...except, of course, for the mermaids.

Helping to run the family business, an herbal apothecary, while keeping her supernatural secret hidden is no easy feat for water witch Aleksandra Daniels. But somehow she's still found time to help her friend Celeste, who has her own Caribbean mermaid heritage, plan the annual Mermaid Festival. As fun-seekers throng the beaches, Alex gets to know and is intrigued by renowned artist Neve Ryland, who's in town to decorate the local park with a mermaid-themed mural. Celeste, however, is less enamored with the artist, as Neve has been spending entirely too much one-on-one time with her boyfriend, Jasper, the director of Bellamy Bay's history museum. Then, a reception for Neve ends abruptly when the artist is found dead in his office.

The police investigation nets Celeste who asks Alex to find the true culprit. With the help of her magically inclined aunt and cousins, Alex dives in to clear her friend's name. But there was more to Neve Ryland than met the eye, and Alex fears she may be in way too deep. Will she catch the crook or be next on the hook?

Excellent follow-up to A Spell For Trouble!

I really love this series about magicals in a small beach town in North Carolina. The narrator does a great job, and the mystery is interesting. I couldn't figure out whodunnit but I couldn't stop listening until I got to the end. And then I was sad it was over. Can't wait for book three!

Beyond suspension of belief

I enjoyed the first book in this series but I couldn't finish this one. Alex's character became increasingly annoying and condescending. She's new to the witchy world but yet she feels like only she can protect her family and friends and solve the mystery. In spite of the fact that she's still learning how to use her abilities. She also keeps important information from her family and friends that would have helped to keep them safe and solve the mystery. I rolled my eyes so much during this book that they were sore. I finally stopped listening to it and returned it.

Ugh, the narrator.

I'll make this fast.
1.The narrator sounds like she's reading to a group of 6 year old children. It's incredibly irritating. She switches words like companionable and compatible.
2. The main character constantly compares her boyfriend to her dad. It's a bit creepy.
3. The boyfriend is unsupportive and condescending. He infantilizes her. Everyone knows when a woman is mad you should just hug her and say 'there there'...... or not so much.
4. I'm not buying another.

A general observation:
Why oh why can't these books ever have a love interest that, ya know, believes in magic? Oh sure 4 books in they do but then there's always a break up because they can't handle it. THEN they get back together.
