About this listen

For fans of Miranda James and Jenn McKinlay comes an enthralling series debut featuring a librarian who solves mysteries with the help of a ghost in the stacks.

Carrie Singleton is just about done with Clover Ridge, Connecticut until she is offered a job as the head of programs and events at the spooky local library, complete with its own librarian ghost. Her first major event is a program presented by a retired homicide detective, Al Buckley, who claims he knows who murdered Laura Foster, a much-loved part-time library aide who was bludgeoned to death 15 years earlier. As he invites members of the audience to share stories about Laura, he suddenly keels over and dies.

The medical examiner reveals that poison is what did him in, and Carrie feels responsible for having gone forward with the program despite pushback from her director. Driven by guilt, Carrie is determined to discover who murdered the detective, convinced it's the same man who killed Laura all those years ago. Luckily for Carrie, she has a friendly, knowledgeable ghost by her side. But as she questions the shadows surrounding Laura's case, disturbing secrets come to light, and with each step Carrie takes, she gets closer to ending up like Al.

Good thing it was free...

Was this book intended as a cozy mystery or a children’s book? The narrator had a pleasant enough voice but it seemed as though she was reading to a child. I agree with some other reviewers that feel it could be shortened a bit - there was a lot of fluff and repetition that made it a lot longer necessary. I “zoned out” a number of times and didn’t miss a thing.

A great book

I've never read/listened to a Cozy Mystery before and downloaded this one because it was a freebee. I listened to it and loved it! I'm excited to listen to the rest of the books in the series.

Charming & Delightful 💕

I'm on a cozy mystery kick and found this story to be charming and delightful.

A late 20 something starting over and finally putting roots down in a new-to-her town, while solving a murder with the help of a cute ghost - yes, yes, yes!

Interesting read

typical cozy mystery flow, yet very enjoyable. there was an unusual aspect to the story I didn't find necessary, yet it added a bit of interest.

I tried so hard

I'm being vague to avoid spoilers, but am actually referencing things that happen in the plot, so if you want to completely avoid plot references, skip this.

I'm home in bed sick...I just wanted a light mindless murder mystery as some mindless entertainment. Instead I got a mindless heroine - how old is this heroine supposed to be - in what century? She's supposedly turning 30 in the present day, but seriously has thoughts along the lines of "I bet this guy thinks we're dating but we're totally not, and I really don't want to lead him on. He just asked me to go to dinner with him, his brother, and his brother's girlfriend...I'll go." or "I just found a clue about the murder that I want solved, and I bet the police don't have access to this clue, but since they don't share information with me, I don't have to share this information with them." I'm fairly certain the local kindergarteners in my town know better than the heroine. She is constantly having inane thoughts like that...as a supposedly modern, mentally sound 30 year old in New England.

The ghost is fun, the supporting characters are fine, the mystery not complicated but interesting, and the performance is good. I just can't get over how unbelievably juvenile and simplistic the main character's thought processes are!

a pretty nice cozy library mystery

was hoping it would be more Halloween themed based on the cover (I know I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover lol!) but over all it was enjoyable. not the most complex mystery, and the protagonist couldn't have done it with out her ghostly friend who held back information the whole book which was kind of an odd use of the paranormal element.

I didn't mind the narrator but not my favorite. the inflection of her voice at the end of each sentence gets a bit annoying. I'm guessing she was trying to keep it light and cheery as it's a cozy mystery but it just felt like too much.

I probably won't jump to read the next in this series.
