About this listen

Five years in a New York state reformatory have left a blemish on Hazel's real name. So when she takes a job as Doctor Gilbert Watts's lady in attendance in 1898, she does so under an alias. In the presence of her quiet and pious employer, Hazel finds more than an income. She finds a friend and a hope that if she can set her tarnished past in order, she might have a future after all.

As Gilbert becomes accustomed to the pleasant chatter of his new dental assistant, he can't help but sense something secretive about her. Perhaps there is more to this woman than meets the eye. Can the questions that loom between them ever be answered? Or will the deeds of days gone by forever rob the future of its possibilities?

Rachel Fordham pens a tender tale of a soft-spoken man, a hardened woman, and the friends that stand by them as they work toward a common purpose - to expunge the record of someone society deemed beyond saving - and perhaps find love along the way.

My favorite Rachel Fordham novel yet.

I have read all of this author's novels and enjoyed them, but this is my favorite so far. The tension and twists really kept me turning pages. Didn't ever want to put it down. Well developed characters and detailed descriptions make the story come alive. I highly recommend this novel to fans of Christian Historical Romance.

The narration was also excellently done and added to my enjoyment of the story. Her male and female voices were clear and distinct. And she held real-sounding emotions in her voice at just the right moments.

Ah...

Ah...a sweet story of redemption, romance, and forgiveness. Forgiving others and forgiving yourself.
I loved Gilbert, the quiet dentist. He gave Hazel a chance and helped her when she needed him most.
Hazel was a changed woman when we meet her. I truly enjoyed seeing her growth.
The romance between Gilbert and Hazel was very sweet and true. I also loved Ina and Duncan.
The mystery played out to an intense conclusion. I did think some things happened a bit too quickly but it still had me on the edge of my seat.
I own both the Kindle and Audible versions of this book and highly recommend them. Lauren Ezzo did a wonderful job narrating.

Skip it

This is pretty awful. The story is predictable, the writing style is basic, the dialogue is cringeworthy, and the narration is subpar.
