About this listen

The amazing life story of Britain's world conquering triathlete, Chrissie Wellington. Chrissie Wellington is the world's No 1 female Ironman triathlete, the current quadruple World Champion and World Record holder. In 2009 she was voted 'Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year' and in 2010 was awarded the MBE. She is the undefeated champion of Triathlon, having won nine Ironman titles from nine races. Her World Record setting race time of 8:19:13 at Quelle Roth Germany in 2010 slashed over 14 minutes from the previous record and where she was only beaten by six men. Chrissie has displayed unprecedented levels of stamina, strength and competitiveness in becoming Ironman World Champion in only her second event at Ironman level. Her victory in Kona, Hawaii in 2007 finishing in 9:08:45 - five minutes ahead of her nearest rival - was described as the 'biggest upset in Ironman history' and 'a remarkable feat, deemed to be near impossible task for any athlete racing as a rookie at their first Ironman World Championships'. She defended her World title in Hawaii in 2008 and again in 2009 and won back her title in 2011 after having to withdraw from the 2010 race due to illness.

This is the remarkable story of how a Norfolk girl - a 'sporty kid, swimming, playing hockey, running, but never excelling and always more interested in the social side of the sports scene' - became a world champion. Chrissie Wellington is the world-record holder for ironman-distance triathlon, and she remains undefeated over the Ironman distance.

Critic reviews

"What emerges from this book is the portrait of a thoroughly nice woman. Her exceptional qualities have led her to achievements that her readers can scarcely imagine. But she still remains touchingly connected to that ordinary girl from Norfolk. It s a winning combination.” Jane Shilling, ( The Daily Mail)
“What amazes me about Chrissie Wellington is not that she wins, but by how much [...] Like Usain Bolt, Wellington has burst on to the scene and destroyed the opposition. Those within athletics said that Bolt was coming but Wellington came from nowhere and wins by a relatively greater margin.” James Cracknell

Insightful and inspiring, particularly for those who are athletes or even just a regular people trying to find their way through life's unknown journey. I could read it again and enjoy it just as much as the first time.

I felt as if I was part of her journey and got an insight into the kind of dedication it takes to be the best. A quest not to be better than others but to triumph over the nay sayer within one self. We all have set backs in life. No one in life is immune. This is a story of grit overcoming fear and doubt.

Absolutely amazing and inspiring without false humility!

As a female triathlete and Ironman myself, this book was incredibly inspiring. I love how Chrissie went into detail about all the emotions that come along with such a big race. some reviewers found it boring and draggy but I think it works really well foe this type of story.

Exceptional!

Good performance. A bit of an affected tone at times.

Story had interesting bits but spent too long on non-triathlon stuff and was repetitive. Ms. Wellington came across as self-absorbed.

Nevertheless, an impressive athlete.

Good But Not Great

Start was little slow but it picked up the pace after certain period when she started her training with Bret. Explanation of the feelings is amazing. I loved the explanation of races.

The first two hours were really hard to get into. More details about the earlier races would have been great. More information about training and nutrition also would have been good. Otherwise I really enjoyed this book.

I actually listened to this book twice , I just couldn’t get enough of Chrissie’s story . She is one tough girl . She doesn’t whine or bitch or complain , she go outs and does her thing ! I love they fact that she absolutely fell in love with the sport , and makes one fall I love with it to ! I couldn’t believe her hectic training schedule, no wonder the woman is a superpower! I would recommend this book to anyone who have any doubts about their ability to complete any sporting event , gosh Chrissie most often raced with borrowed equipment ! Awesomeness .

Best triathlon book ever
