About this listen

Peter Marlin's wife is found strangled and he becomes the prime suspect.

She'd only just returned from an unexplained absence of several months. And during that time, Peter had found a new lover. Everything points to the husband but there's no real proof.

Inspector John Crow is called in to help the local police. But his new colleagues aren't keen on an outsider. And Crow must solve the case before anyone else dies.

Inspector John Crow

Skeletally-built, mild-mannered Inspector John Crow is established in the Murder Squad in London and constantly meets hostility when he is called upon to work on murder cases in regional crime squads in Wales and the Midlands. He displays strong moral feelings, and a sensitivity which brings him into conflict with regional staff as he doggedly and successfully pursues the truth in cases where he is called in.

The pros: The book was very well read by Chris MacDonnell. Any time that passed was enjoyable because of this narrator clear speech and wonderful voice. The author has a nice writing style and the dialogue is fine.

The Cons: After listening for hours, I felt no attraction to any of the characters. In my opinion, too many characters were introduced too close to each other and too early into the novel. There was a lot of talk about financial matters....a lot!

I listened to this book all the way through. During the climax and reveal, I was so totally detached that I would need a re-listen to understand the complexity of events & motives. I’m not deleting this audio book, yet, because the narrator’s voice is just so nice & smooth that I think I will restart & use it for a few days for my pre-slumber audio on sleep timer.

Narrator Excellent, Mystery Not So Much...
