About this listen

“Do we ever really know our children? Amber Garza invites readers to untangle the web of a family just like yours—or are they? This thriller will have you triple-guessing yourself.”—Eliza Jane Brazier, author of If I Disappear

A woman questions everything she knows about her son when a local woman is found dead.

Valerie has been forgetting things. Her daughter worries about her being on her own in her big Victorian house—one rumored to be haunted after a tragedy decades earlier—and truth be told, she is a little lonely. With few options, she asks her adult son to move home, but it’s not quite the reunion she hoped for. Hudson is taciturn, moody, and frequently gone.

The neighbors already hold a grudge against Hudson, and they aren’t happy about his return. When a young woman is found murdered a block away, suspicion falls on him immediately, without a shred of evidence. While Valerie fights to defend her son, she begins to wonder who she really invited into her home.

It’s a horrible thing for a mother to even think...but is it possible she’s enabled a monster? A monster she is living with, alone?

Entertaining in a Dark Way

This audio book had interesting characters and some good plot twists. There just weren't any likable characters to identify with. Everyone had serious charcter flaws. Still it was a good read.

A Lesson in Bad Parenting

An alcoholic dad, a rock band mom, and two completely soulless kids. I didn’t mind the book, the narrator was good but it lacked character likeability. The flashback narrations of the son in the book were asinine (as it some nine year old boy expresses himself that way). In the end it was a crappy parenting creates dysfunctional children kind of story.

Don’t Understand the Good Reviews

Essentially the entirety of the book is a mother trying to decide which of her two children is evil. It’s uninteresting and lacks depth. I kept waiting for something to happen…and it didn’t. I don’t recommend this book.

Excellent!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I figured it out very early on, but it didn’t matter. It was still great!

Wow!!

What a great story. Keep my interest until the end. I did not see the last twist coming.

Surprised

Glad I finished the book as i almost stopped listening after a neighborhood watch didn’t prove to keep one of the key players from getting into another neighbors house through the front door. But the ending was good and contained a few surprises. Narration was okay

Really good!

Just when I thought I knew the ending, there was a twist, and then another. Highly recommend.

Great Listen...mostly sad story though.

I've heard of this author but my first listen of her work. Didn't guess ending exactly right. I did have guesses but it kept throwing in things that through me off.
Also not a typical reaction to this story but people read books for all different reasons. A take away for me from this book was I wasn't able to have kids and it mostly breaks my heart but also even if I did have kids it doesn't always turn out how you hope. So be thankful for your life and what you do have. I'm sure this is not something most people would remember or relate with but this is what came to mind for me.

Meh

I always struggle with this narrator. This time was no different. She is very robotic, sounding, and all the characters sound the same. Not sure if I would’ve liked the story more if it had been read by someone else. It was just kind of there. No real high points or low points. Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it.

Not a bad read

It was pretty slow at the beginning. Some confusing dialog about a long-since dead girl. Better at the end. Narrator was good.
