About this listen

Jan Karon's millions of fans can't wait to spend time with her heartwarming and hilarious characters, who have a way of becoming family. In fact, fans and booksellers across the country kept Out to Canaan and At Home in Mitford on The New York Times best-seller list for months. In A New Song, Mitford's longtime Episcopal priest, Father Tim, retires. However, new challenges and adventures await when he agrees to serve as interim minister of a small church on Whitecap Island. He and his wife, Cynthia, soon find that Whitecap has its own unforgettable characters: a church organist with a mysterious past, a lovelorn bachelor placing personal ads, a mother battling paralyzing depression. They also find that Mitford is never far away when circumstances "back home" keep their phone ringing off the hook. In this fifth novel of the beloved series, fans old and new will discover that a trip to Mitford and Whitecap is twice as good for the soul.

One of the best of the series

This is one of my fav in the series but with this Mitford series it's very important to read/listen to each book in the series in their proper order to really understand all the beautiful characters. Start with At Home in Mitford and go all the way through Light From Heaven!

Traveling Companion

This is another of the great Jan Karon "At Home in Mitford series". The characters come to life in each book and you can't wait to hear what happens in the next book. We travel with them in the car. I can not remember ever being inpatient or annoyed over construction or other hold up on the road as we are happily enjoying life in Mitford. This is a series the whole family can enjoy and grow closer together. No sex, violence or bad language. Warning for very small children is it about life and sometimes bad things happen to good people, but the author always teaches us a valuable lesson we can carry to our lives.

Great voice

John is the perfect choice to record this series. The author is great but I did not enjoy her recording of book four.
PS. I’m going to listen to the entire series

I love this book.

I love all the Mitford novels but this one is especially good. They have a long good bye to everyone in Mitford but then the author introduces us to a whole new world on a North Carolina barrier island. Wonderful new characters are created in the new seaside town. A new parish. A new challenge for Father Tim in bringing a healing to a congregation that has been wounded and divided by the unfaithfulness of the choir director who has an affair with the organist. There are sweet touching moments and hilarious moments like poor Father Tim getting seasick on his deep sea fishing adventure. Then there is a real surprise plot twist that no one could see coming and I was glued to the narrative until I finally heard how it was resolved. You will love these novels about the wise and winsome Episcopal priest and his parishioners.

Wonderful

The reader made this wonderful story even more delightful. Loved his singing. The author captured the characters in the story so much I wanted to visit them myself. They were real. Grand story.

Great Narrator

Father Tim, John McDonough.... can't listen to anyone else. His baritone voice reflects what I picture, sincere, caring, often troubled but finding solace in prayer.

To read it, is like coming home...

You don't read this book, you fall into it. And the feeling it invokes is nothing short of coming home. As well performed as it is written, John McDonough and Jan Karon make the perfect pair. One wants it to go on forever.
