About this listen

The disappearance of a teenage girl in upstate New York sets off a powder keg of accusations, bigotry, and fear - with deadly results - in Suzanne Chazin's stunning new thriller featuring Hispanic police detective Jimmy Vega.

On a frigid, January night, a blond, blue-eyed high school girl walks out of an English class she tutors for immigrants - and vanishes. Suspicion quickly falls on the men she was teaching, many of whom are undocumented. As disturbing evidence trickles in, news of the incident spreads beyond the scenic town of Lake Holly, New York, unearthing deep-seated fears and enflaming cultural tensions.

For county police detective Jimmy Vega, the situation is personal. His girlfriend, Harvard-educated attorney Adele Figueroa, heads the immigrant center where the teen volunteer disappeared. If Vega can't find the girl soon and clear Adele's clients, the place of refuge may be forced to shut its doors. Still reeling over his own recent career missteps, Vega does his best to run interference between Adele and the local police. But when Vega's boss assigns him a grunt detail working for the new county supervisor, the man's political ambitions clash with Vega's deepest convictions. Vega can't imagine a worse turn of events - until he uncovers even darker forces at play. Someone wants to destroy far more than Vega's career. And no matter which way he turns, every step will put him and his family in the killer's crosshairs.

Excellent Mystery Series!

Great mysteries; fun, enduring characters; interesting setting in fictional, outer NYC suburb (eg 50-miles upstate); and themes of significance written with lots of heart! The full-meal deal!

A Place on my Favorites List!

I am soo glad I chose this audiobook! I used to be a suspense mystery thriller seeker, but have had a difficult time finding books in present day with unique plots and stories. It seemed most books were copycats, fell flat, serial killer overkill, vengeful ridden angst, or wasn't edited adequately.
This book - series? Dare I hope? - is so modern and possibly real, I swam in it until I drifted away. Ms Chazin brought this community full front, up close and personal. It doesn't seem like it was glorifying, apologetic, nor begging for pity. It screamed for embracing the unknown and being given a chance and an open ear.

It's book 4 in the series, but it's a complete stand alone book. I didn't feel lost or confused. I fell right into the book without missing a heartbeat.
I loved the writing. It flowed and made sense! Wow.
Although this is current times, I've never been to NY but have seen it on TV. Ms Chazin pulled me from (wherever I was while listening) and planted me on the sidelines. She wrote with such a pulsating tempo it was mesmerizing.
Omgoddess! So many characters but the way they were introduced and interacted with one another made is soo easy to keep track of them.
Of course, with all of the characters brought tangles of relationships and back stories. Once again, Ms Chazin pegged how to present it. Not once was I lost.
The main character was delectable! He is a genuine light in a genre overcome with snark, bad azz, magic, and deplorable womanizers (although I do catch a good book with those qualities once in a while.)
The narrator- this was my introduction to him. He delivered a flawless performance and was the icing on the cake.
Recommend to anyway who wants a stellar mystery with characters you'll love and a plot which is different. I completely intend to go back and pick up the earlier books in this series.

Great series, timely topic

I’m so glad I found this series! I can’t recommend it highly enough - not only are the characters well written and the plot interesting, but all the books provide such insight into the daily lives/challenges of undocumented people, and lay enforcement officers navigating between the law and the general public’s biases.
