About this listen

The Rosalind Thorne mystery series - inspired by the novels of Jane Austen - continues as the audacious Rosalind strives to aid those in need while navigating the halls of high society.

Rosalind Thorne has slowly but assuredly gained a reputation as "a useful woman" - by helping respectable women out of some less-than-respectable predicaments. Her latest endeavor is a tragedy waiting to happen. Desperate Margaretta Seymore is with child - and her husband is receiving poisoned pen letters that imply that her condition is the result of an affair with the notorious actor Fletcher Cavendish. Margaretta asks Rosalind to find out who is behind the scurrilous letters. But before she can make any progress, Cavendish is found dead, stabbed through the heart. Suddenly, Rosalind is plunged into the middle of one of the most sensational murder trials London has ever seen, and her client's husband is the prime suspect. With the help of charming Bow Street runner Adam Harkness, she must drop the curtain on this fatal drama before more lives are ruined.

Loved It!

I can't wait to read all of the Rosalind Thorne Mystery series. I am always looking for a good mystery without graphic sex and violence. This one pleased me immensely! Such a good story!!

Good story!

Interesting and well thought through but Don’t introduce new names at the last half hour! Still a good story.

Another delightful detective period tale.

I love detective stories and when the detective is a charming lady who had made her way into an acceptable class it is all the more rich as a period piece. The narrator was easy to understand, even when I sped the story up a bit. The plot twists and turns continued to surprise even to the very end and I was left needing to read the next adventure in order to learn how the romantic interest plays out.

Every chapter a gem

I am so happy I had the good fortune to try out this mystery series. The first one was included in my membership and now I am hooked! The plot of this one is an intricate woven tale of hidden identities, greed, murder, a mother’s loss and unrequited love. Yes, there’s a lot to handle but this author kept me fascinated with every chapter.
A previous review had me concerned with historical inaccuracies so I did my own research into these concerns. I found that graphite was found in England in the 1500’s and Germany mass produced wood and graphite pencils by the mid 1600’s. I’m sure by 1817 the pencil was a common item. Shorthand instructional books were written in the 1700’s by multiple people. I know court records were kept during this time period so I don’t understand the dispute. Women who wrote often did so under a pseudonym but they still published. I don’t find it far fetched that Alice was able to fill a news writer occupation. There are references to the limited means a gentlewoman had to support herself and most were totally dependent on male relatives. Writing was an early career choice for independent women.
I thoroughly recommend this book as entertaining and informative of early 1800’s English society.

Sometimes hard to follow

I really do enjoy the Rosalind Thorne series. The narrator is great! The story lines are good. I do find at times there are so many twists that I struggle to follow what’s happening. But it’s not so much that I’d stop reading the novels! ☺️

Enjoyable listen

The main character is believable and easy to like. I enjoyed the reader, her voice is pleasant and her cadence is good. I was surprised by the ending which is always good with a mystery. I would recommend for anyone looking for an easy listen.

Good but long

I enjoyed this book but found it to be long and not able to hold my attention as others had. The performance was very good.

Well written period mystery

Roslyn is an interesting likable clever protagonist in a story that keeps one guessing till the very end. Male sure to read these books in order.
Also, the narrator’d voice is pleasant except when speaking for the drunken Captain!

Very well written

I enjoyed this book very much. It kept my interest throughout the book. I had no idea who was the murderer or why until the end. I do like some humor in the mysteries that I listen to and this one didn’t have any. In fact it had a sad ending (kind of a bit heavy), but I still enjoyed the story and the narration. It was not just a formula written mystery story, it had depth and very well written. This is the second book and I can’t remember if I read the first book, though I do have it in my library. I am going to read the first book to see if I like it as well as I like this one.
