About this listen

The One and Only Ivan meets The Wild Robot in this unique and deeply moving middle grade novel about the journey of a fictional Mars rover, from the Newbery Honor–winning author of Other Words for Home. New York Times bestseller!

Meet Resilience, a Mars rover determined to live up to his name.

Res was built to explore Mars. He was not built to have human emotions. But as he learns new things from the NASA scientists who assemble him, he begins to develop humanlike feelings. Maybe there’s a problem with his programming….

Human emotions or not, launch day comes, and Res blasts off to Mars, accompanied by a friendly drone helicopter named Fly. But Res quickly discovers that Mars is a dangerous place filled with dust storms and giant cliffs. As he navigates Mars’s difficult landscape, Res is tested in ways that go beyond space exploration.

As millions of people back on Earth follow his progress, will Res have the determination, courage, and resilience to succeed… and survive?

The notes

I liked how the author developed every character, and I liked the plot twist well.

Entertaining

How resilience has human feelings was my favorite part I’m twelve years old and my younger brother is eight he thought it was not good because he wanted it to be funny and exciting but I thought it was very entertaining

Magical!

This is the book of the year! So beautifully written, with a heartwarming ending. I finished it in no time. I highly recommend it to upper elementary and middle school-aged students.

fell in love with this rover!

it seems very boring and robotic when you listen to the initial part of this book, then you start warming up to the rover’s mannerism then fall in love with him! what a lovely tale!

its wonderful to know how the author has mixed science with emotion. the letters from a child spotlight a different perspective on the main characters.

Inspiring story for the next generation

I am eager to share this story with my fifth grade students. Want a gem of a novel! It perfectly pairs science with imagination, and the storytelling was so engaging. I was frequently making notes for discussions, writing activities, and computer science lessons I could do with my students to help us connect with the book. One of the best juvenile fiction stories I’ve read in a while.

I also really enjoyed it as a listen - the different voices for each character, human or robotic, really helped the story come to life!

"Avoid dust. See stars."

I have been recommending this story (especially the audiobook) to whomever I can! We listened to it as a family on a road trip and fell in love with the robots—Fly was a special favorite.

The performance is great and the story is delightful. My kids have been listening to it again while doing chores :)
