About this listen

The final battle has come.

Grinner and his conspiracy to overthrow Perennia have been defeated, but victory came at a high cost. The alliance suffered losses it could ill afford, for the true enemy still lies in Baresh, growing stronger with each day that passes.

Leading the combined armies of three kingdoms, Aaron and his companions march to the city, but even with such a force, even with the power of the Virtues, victory is anything but assured.

For when blades are drawn, when battle begins, the only certainty is blood.

Aaron knows this, just as he knows the terrible odds he faces. Yet, he is not alone. His allies march with him - creatures out of myth and legend, cut-throats and thieves, sailors and smugglers, and the mysterious Akalians who have finally chosen to step out of the shadows and into the light.

But the ancient mage has allies of his own, creatures endowed with speed and strength greater than any man, bereft of any human feeling, including pain. But there is strength in emotion, a power that even the thousand-year-old mage, even creatures out of legend, cannot stand against.

For with emotion comes valor and courage, honor and duty.

With emotion comes hope.

While I recognize the often repetitive and mundane nature of some of the writing, it did not detract from the story as a whole. It was very easy to follow and the characters were llikable. The story culminates into an exciting conclusion which wrapped up all loose ends. I enjoyed this series and look forward to the next by this author. The performer is excellent as he always is.

Great job by Jacob writing this story and finishing this series with gusto! I enjoyed the whole thing, great peak and great build up getting there. Unlikely heros, criminals, magic, all make this story so powerful. I also enjoyed the short chapter at the end, but don't want to say anything specific so i don't spoil it for anyone.

Great ending to the series!

This has been a great series! Wishing we had more to go but glad about the way it ended.

Amazing Ending to this series!

This was, overall, a very enjoyable series. The characters were well developed and relatable. The story moved well for the most part. What holds it back from a full 5 star review, in my opinion, was the "too happy" ending in the final chapter. Given the overall character arc, one would expect the protagonist to be much more conflicted given the story's conclution. That aside, the story was a fun listen. I would have preferred a bit more nuanced conclusion, but was well satisfied.

The narration was very very well done. Characters maintaind their "voice" and their "personality" very well throughout several volumes, which is a great feat for a narrator.

After a long run of middle books, the finale brought back the ingredients I loved in book 1. It was still too much talk. It was still frustrating to have the characters (and virtues) separated for large chunks. It was even more frustrating that that it took the last five books to bring The Blade and Boyce Kelvan face to face. The deaths along the way were the obvious ones. The resolution was predicted and convenient.
The happily ever afters were never in doubt.

Yet, here we finally have the virtues deployed often and in concert with other virtues and teams.
The action is non-stop. All the colorful supporting characters get their moment in the spotlight.
There’s humor and heart. And, there’s Wendell; he alone was worth the price of admission.

That’ll do, little firefly, that’ll do
