Publisher's summary

From the backstreets of London to grand country estates, theirs is a journey of self-discovery, a breathtaking story of love and redemption.

Nothing is simple when it comes to seduction.

Daniel Thorpe has made a point of avoiding Daphne Chambers ever since she refused his proposal of marriage. But three years have passed, and as experienced enquiry agents solving crimes against the aristocracy, their paths were destined to cross.

Chasing criminals is no job for a lady. But the woman is too stubborn to take his advice. Is it any wonder she finds herself the victim of a silent stalker, one happy to hide and wait in the shadows?

Daniel was surprised when she accepted his offer of help, more surprised to find that one passionate kiss in a carriage brings all the old feelings flooding back.

Great Mix of Action and Romance!

When Daniel Thorpe proposed to widowed Daphne Chambers, she rejected him believing that his offer was made out of duty and not love. Despite this, Daniel secretly watched out for Daphne and longed to protect her. Three years after the proposal, Daniel and Daphne are thrown together when they're forced to work as investigators on the same case. Daphne has been living in fear since her husband's death, pursued by a stalker she can't identify. Desperate to rid herself of the threat, she asks Daniel for help and he jumps at the chance to help the woman he loves.

I really enjoyed this one, it had a great mix of action and romance. Daniel and Daphne were introduced in The Secret To Your Surrender, which I haven't read yet, and I didn't have to read the previous book to understand their backstory. It was a steamy read with a few descriptive scenes.

I liked both main characters, they had great chemistry and a fun way of bantering with each other. For two crack detectives, they're pretty blind when it comes to detecting each other's feelings! Their jobs took them to some interesting places I hadn't seen explored in other historical novels. The twists and turns in the story definitely kept me hooked!

Liisa Ivary did a great job with the narration, I've listened to her before and she's wonderful with the accents and voices for each character. She read with intensity in the dramatic parts and it kept me on the edge of my seat. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review. I always enjoy this author's books, and I can't wait for the next one!

A GREAT MYSTERY SOLVING DUO

I love this book as much as Ms. Clee's others. At first, I did not care for Mr. Thorpe's gruff persona. But as the story progressed, his personality grew on me. He and Daphne must solve a mystery, and together their love blossoms. I like their chemistry and feel that they would make a great team solving mysteries together in a series.

This is another beautiful narration by Ms. Ivary. Her narration of Mr. Thorpe is spot-on. She gets his brooding temperament just right.

Didn't want to stop listening.

I started to listen to chapter 1 on my way to work and had to check and make sure it wasn't a sequel. The action and story sucked me in from page one. I didn't want to stop listening when I got to work.

A spy story with twists and turns

I loved this book. A spy story with twists and turns. It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Every time I thought I got it figured out the story took another turn. And the banter between the two main characters was so much fun that I actually laughed out loud a few times. Ms Clee did a great job telling the story and I will read/listen to more of her books for sure. The narrator was very pleasant to listen to with just the right amount of emphasis when necessary.

Danger and darkness abound, yet softened by love.

This was a very interesting story. The narrator did a wonderful job keeping the characters separate and identifiable. Daphne was a strong and very intelligent woman, and I loved her independence. Daniel wallowed in his past, making him appear cold, but his sweet, tender side was always just beneath the surface. The story is full of danger, darkness, and twists. The emotions between Daphne and Daniel were strong, and gave the story that softer, lighter touch.

I received a copy of this audiobook as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.

Mystery and romance.

There was so much to enjoy in this story of two investigators, Daphne Chambers and Daniel Thorpe. There is the mystery surrounding Daphne, who is following her, the renewed feelings between Daniel and Daphne and then there is Daniel himself, what is his background? I enjoyed meeting up with Lucas Dempsey from the previous books, he’s still as mischievous as ever. The narrator used different voices for the characters, helping to bring the story to life. This was as an entertaining read and will keep you gripped until the end.

Suspense, Romance, Mystery

This was a great book. I loved the mystery and the romance in this story. The mystery kept me enraptured with the characters. The chemistry between Daphne and Daniel was hot. The fact that they suppressed their love and concern for one another adds to the story. The only thing that was difficult for me was that I didn't read the previous story in the series and I felt a little lost about the history of the characters. Once I was able to figure out that they had worked together in the past, I really enjoyed the book. The narrator does a great job of keeping the characters separate and keeps up with the action in the story. I recommend this to anyone that loves suspense and romance with a couple of steamy love scenes.

Daniel and Daphne's story has seduced me

Daniel and Daphne's story has seduced me. I loved the second chances theme of this book and the way these two characters slowly learn the good and bad about each other. Both have their own strengths and both are delightful characters.
Adele Clee has written a very clever murder-mystery into this historical romance and it kept me guessing and enjoying the adventure. I am happy to recommend either the ebook or audiobook versions.
Liisa Ivary's narration of the audiobook was mostly good but from time to time I found her a bit overdramatic, but nevertheless acceptable.
I requested and received a free copy of this audiobook and this is my voluntary and unbiased review of it.

Narrator made it sound scandalous

Narrator was brilliant. Started listening to it and I laughed as she made it sound it so scandalous even though it had only just started. Her voice was wonderful.
It's a recency romance with a feisty female trying to stand up in the world after being widowed and earn an income in a society that doesn't understand women working outside accepted roles, chasing criminals. And of course the man who has loved her deeply from afar for years and she doesn't know it, while he obsesses with her safety.
Contains some sex scenes ... might not want to have this on when others can walk in and ask, what exactly are you listening to? Timing is everything.
Whilst it is part of a series, if you haven't listened to the previous ones, you can still listen to this and enjoy the story

Narrator can break a nice book - case in point

Story is interesting and fast paced.

The narrator, really is not my style. All the time she sounds breathless and over dramatic. She does an ok job keeping the male and female voices somewhat different. But ugh she is irritating to listen to. Unfortunately she is the narrator for most of Adele’s books making the books a bit cringe worthy.
