Publisher's summary

"There's a scarlet thread of murder running through the colorless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it."

From the moment Dr. John Watson takes lodgings in Baker Street with the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, he becomes intimately acquainted with the bloody violence and frightening ingenuity of the criminal mind.

In A Study in Scarlet, Holmes and Watson's first mystery, the pair are summoned to a south London house where they find a dead man whose face is a twisted mask of horror. The body is unmarked by violence, but on the wall a mysterious word has been written in blood.

The police are baffled by the crime and its circumstances. But when Sherlock Holmes applies his brilliantly logical mind to the problem, he uncovers a tragic tale of love and deadly revenge.

The Game is Afoot!

I am a fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, so was interested in listening to this audiobook. And it did not disappoint. Of course, the story is rich with the age in which it was written, and the narrative performance added layers to the characters and the setting. I was impressed by the narrator's range as she took on each character. I highly recommend this to Sherlock Holmes fans!

Great Holmes Case and Awesome Narration

Thoroughly enjoyed this work and especially the presentations of the characters by one of the top narrators of her generation, @AudioSorceress. The listener is not hearing a story, but is in the room with Holmes, Watson, and the other detectives, sifting through the evidence, piecing together a motive, and finally taking the perpetrator's statement -after walking miles in his shoes. A fantastic partnership indeed breathed fresh life into this already excellent historical crime mystery..

Brilliant narration of a classic!

For my first audio book review I was so brilliantly pleased. Marnye Young is beyond fabulous as she narrates this Sherlock Holmes mystery. I was immediately drawn in with her perfect accent, emotional character inflection and passion for the story for the fine characters we all know and love. I was amazed to know she is not British at all! A very brilliant and talented actress that can read me a story anytime! I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, more so than reading it years ago. Marnye makes it fun and exciting and I found my self smiling, laughing and intently listening to the story. One of my first thoughts was the main male characters and how she would tackle it? With ease, grace and a heck of a lot of talent. I recommend this story and anything Marnye narrates, she's amazing. She also narrated another favorite book EDEN by Jeanne Blasberg. A 5 star read that I may just need to listen to with Marnye Young narrating. 5 stars and Bravo!

Captivating listening experience!

It took me a few minutes to overcome my prejudice that Sherlock Holmes should be narrated by an Englishman. I'm glad I did! Books are translated into different languages and Shakespeare adapted successfully to the modern age. Marnye Young does Conan Doyle's luxurious prose and memorable characters proud in the consulting detective's first appearance to the world. The quality and range of Marnye's voice; her eloquence and intonation; and her skilful interpretation, serve to weave the listener into one of the great stories of the detective genre. Whether it's the action in London and the American plains or the inner workings of Holmes' deductive reasoning, Marnye Young delivers a captivating listening experience. Congratulations Marnye; hopefully more to come!

Fantastic!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A delightful classic, brought to life by a new voice!

What did you like best about this story?

The narrator drew me in to the story with her superb storytelling. It's a rare and beautiful talent to be able to take the listener from reality and take them inside the story--to make them part of the tale.

I don’t know why it took me so long to read the original Sherlock Holmes story. It was a delightful read with a rich, heartbreaking story that I didn’t expect.

It felt like the characters were in the same room!

If you could sum up A Study in Scarlet in three words, what would they be?

Classic given life!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes! I was always wondering whodunit.

Have you listened to any of Marnye Young’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. As good if not better. She does an amazing job of bringing the characters to life.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Don't blink or you'll miss whodunit!

Any additional comments?

Bravo! Bravo!

When I'd heard Marnye Young was narrating "A Study In Scarlet," I immediately snapped it up. For sometime now, I've been wanting to read the first Sherlock Holmes mystery, and knowing how great she is at narrating, I jumped at the chance to listen to her bring the characters to life. And she did just that!

Review of narration: To my delight, as I listened, it felt as though I was in the same room, as if a live play were carrying on before me. Marnye did an amazing job of breathing life into each and every character. Not once was I ever confused about which character was speaking. From Sherlock to Dr. Watson... Scotland Yard Detectives to Midwest Americans... Male and female... Young and old... Marnye managed a perfect voice for each of them.

For readers who always say, "The book is better than the movie..." I say, try audio books! Audio books are the best of both worlds! Every time I found myself driving, cleaning house, or walking the aisles of Walmart, I slipped in my earbuds and listened to a great story being read by an amazing narrator! I'm a fan indeed, and I'll be seeking more books narrated by Marnye Young!

Review of story: What's not to like? It's Sherlock Holmes! And unlike the movies and TV series, which I still love, Sherlock's skills of deduction are not only amazing, he tells you how he came to his conclusions. I often get frustrated with the modern-day Sherlock stories, as I don't believe all the clues are available for me to figure out the culprit.

As I listened and read this story, I started to think that was a trait of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Thankfully, I was wrong. All the clues were there; Sherlock even pointed them out. I, sadly--even though I usually figure out every mystery I read--missed the culprit. That's okay, though. It was a wonderful mystery, and one I plan to read and listen to several more times.

I highly recommend this story--and especially with the narration!

Happy Reading / Listening!

Great Narrator!

I hadn't read this Sherlock Holmes, so I was excited to find such a great narrator. I've listened to other audiobooks from Marnye, but was amazed at her range.

The story... Hmmm... I think I need to re-listen, as the mystery was wild. I'm wondering if I missed some clues, as the mystery seemed unsolvable, but maybe that's Sherlock Holmes!
