About this listen

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning (somewhat mistakenly - see inductive reasoning) and astute observation to solve difficult cases. He is arguably the most famous fictional detective ever created, and is one of the best known and most universally recognizable literary characters in any genre.

Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that featured Holmes. All but four stories were narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson, two having been narrated by Holmes himself, and two others written in the third person. The first two stories, short novels, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialized novels appeared almost right up to Conan Doyle's death in 1930.

Wonderful stories!

Loved every word of every story. Sir Doyle was a remarkable story teller and his words, spoken beautifully by Mr. Scalon, has given many a evening of enjoyment.

Very Satisfying Version

If you're fond of Sherlock Holmes you know the stories, or most of them. This is an excellent way to enjoy them again. The narrator is not very dramatic, which works well - makes the experience more like reading and lets the writing speak for itself. I like the way he does women - not the silly falsetto some male narrators use. His American characters are so believable it makes me wonder is he is really British.

I took the word of some reviewers and picked this version over some others - I haven't tried any others but I really like this one.

Hours of intrigue

The complete Sherlock Holmes collection is truly a gem. The performance was quite good and the stories got me through a 10,000 mile road trip. Quite enjoyable!

Brilliant material.

I loved this .. great and beatiful books read by a great orator. Although I must admit some of the female voices are so tedious I wanted to quit listening. Beyond that I loved the book and performance.

Scalon's narration is superior to Fry's

A few months ago, I purchased the SH collection narrated by Stephen Fry and had a difficult time getting into the series.
When the option to buy this series narrated by Stephen Scalon for less then a dollar, I jumped at it.

For the first few chapters, I alternated between narrators but it became clear that Scalon's narration was superior to Fry's...at least for my audio pleasure.

Long but worth the listen.

Loved it! Only remember one chapter where words cut out from whole collection. Also this is very long collection, occasionally switching in parts to a German (for intro and conclusion to sections). This was confusing at first but I didn't mind it once I understood what was going on.
should add that I have a good deal of Sir Conan Doyle's works and I do believe it helps if you actually enjoy mysteries.

Fully Realized Sherlock Holmes

This is another great Holmes collection. This is just as good as the Frye version. Both narrators are top notch and bring Sherlock to life. So, check out the audible samples and see which one you like best. You know the stories, so I won’t review them. What matters most is the narrator, and this one is great.

Highly recommended.

Narration and Editing need improvement

Who ever edited this didn't listen to it in total. There were a number of time where the narrator stumbled through sentences, repeated lines, used the incorrect voice or reused one, or outright stopped speaking. I would assume the one job an editor has is to make sure everything lines up correctly, no matter how long it is.
