Publisher's summary

The second book in the bestselling Chronicles of St Mary's series which follows a group of tea-soaked disaster magnets as they hurtle their way around History. If you love Jasper Fforde or Ben Aaronovitch, you won't be able to resist Jodi Taylor.

Wherever the historians go, chaos is sure to follow....

Dispatched to Victorian London to seek out Jack the Ripper, things go badly wrong when he finds the St Mary's historians first. Stalked through the fog-shrouded streets of Whitechapel, Max is soon running for her life. Again.

And that's just the start. Max finds herself in a race against time when an old enemy is intent on destroying St Mary's. An enemy willing, if necessary, to destroy History itself.

From the Hanging Gardens of Nineveh to the murder of Thomas a Becket, via an unscheduled dodo rescue mission, join the historians of St Mary's as they hurtle around History on more hilarious, hair-raising escapades.

Not a Ripper fan

While I very much like Jodi Taylor and the Chronicles of St Mary, this is my least favorite of the series. It felt more like a Halloween special. I have never been a fan of Jack the Ripper and didn’t like it here. I have started re-listening to the series and have decided to skip the first several chapters on this book. On the other hand, if you like to scare yourself silly, then you’re going to love this one.

Clever story, well told

Time, place, characters inventive yet realistic. The story was humorous without being campy or trite. I plan to read or listen to the entire series.

I believe this series would be a great TV series.

I loved the snarky humour and great dialogue. I was immersed in the life from prologue to epilogue.

Madcap Historical Adventures Abound!

I really do enjoy a good, sarcastic British turn of phrase and snark. I also don't like reviews that outline, and ultimately ruin, a good read or listen. I suggest listening. the narrator brings it all to life.

Getting Good!

This series is a fun romp. The narrator is perfect and easy to hear, with a nice cadence and a great accent (for us in the USA). St. Mary's is a place I want to live in, I want to hang with this crew and in these books you get to live their adventures with them. It includes a lot of adventure, not too many plot twists, but a few. It easily kept me entertained and I always downloaded the next in the series when finished. The author keeps the reader's interest without the use of gratuitous foul language or harsh sexual situations. I don't think I'd say this is YA, but an eighteen yr old could probably read it without any lasting horrors, lol. If you are looking for a fun series that will keep you enthralled, this is it!!

I love these books!

I don’t care. I love these books. The narrator is excellent for this type of book, and the stories are always hilarious.

I am surprised at how often the time traveling historians of St. Mary’s can manage to get into terrible trouble on excursions that are meant as brief and safe pleasure jaunts but manage to come out relatively unscathed from adventures that have high probability of danger going in.

I hope they will eventually manage to somehow contain and control the rogue enemy who keeps trying to destroy St. Mary’s. But I suppose it isn’t likely.

Dodos and Jack the Ripper. Hilarious and harrowing

Great narration. Great humor. Great story, even though it's a bit "episodic". Heroine is not as nice and sweet person as in the first book. Don't think I'd like her in real life. Great fun to read about though. Will read the next book.

History, laughter and not-time-travel

Wonderfully rounded characters getting into extraordinary situations, described with humor and wit. Always a good laugh. The narrator adds another layer of feeling to it all.
