About this listen

Heroes shall rise and fall, the earth shall be stained red, and the fate of the Banished Lands will be decided once and for all in A Time of Courage, the final audiobook in acclaimed fantasy author John Gwynne's Of Blood and Bone trilogy.

The demon king Asroth has been freed from his iron prison. Now, alongside his dark bride, Fritha, he plans to conquer the whole of the Banished Lands.

In the shadows of Forn Forest, Riv and the surviving Ben-Elim desperately search for a way to unite those who remain against Asroth's vast army.

Far in the west, Drem is with the Order of the Bright Star, besieged by a demon horde. Their fragile defenses are on the brink of shattering, but they know that it is better to fight and die than to live without hope.

And across the Banished Lands, armies are heading south, to settle ancient grudges and decide the fate of humanity.

The first book of the series was a little slow and it took effort to keep my attention. Books 2 and 3 were much better and I truly enjoyed listening to them.

Took a bit to get going

My first experience with the author and narrator. I can’t wait to start another book. They both are excellent. Thank you

I loved the narration. I love every battle scene, and following each POV as they experienced them. A satisfying end, IMHO. Loved my entire journey in the Banished Lands. Truth and Courage!

There is quite a bit of grim and heartbreak in this book, but overall it finished the series in solid fashion. Can’t wait to read more of this author’s work.

Great finish to the series

John Gwynne writes very fun action fantasy with lots of suspense, lots of action, and compelling characters. somehow his books are simultaneously brutal, grim, and inspiring. probably my favorite thing about him as that all his books are wholly unique in the genre of contemporary fiction. Gwynne creates his own worlds and fills them with unique lore, unique creatures, and one-of-a-kind storylines. if you like hack and slash fantasy I highly recommend this book (as well as his others).

a good ending to a great series

the reason I put a 4 instead of a 5 is superficial, but annoying to me. I left a similar review before. the narrator places odd pauses in weird locations throughout the reading, but his voices are great. the editor didn't catch simple mistakes, again. for example, geldings are male horses, not female. a character is referred to as one pronoun throughout the book, then suddenly referred to as another for a couple sentences, then back to the original pronoun. a cairn was in one location, but at the end of the book, was magically at another. just small things, but they tended to take me out of the story. overall, enjoyable, and if you aren't pedantic like me, you'll probably enjoy them greatly.

I love these books

It was a very straight forward story. I feel it could have been even. Better with a little more shock value and a plot twist or two. But a really good and enjoyable listen from start to finish with the pay off that everyone wants.

A Fulfilling Read

This being the 6th book in the series narrated by Damian Lynch, I think I’ll have a hard time moving on to a new series and a new narrator. This whole series has been such a good ride. I listened to The Faithful and The Fallen right before this and it just flowed so well together.

Damian Lynch is an amazing narrator
