About this listen
After being viciously stabbed and left for dead, Hadrian Becket, Earl of Ravenhurst, struggles back to health only to discover he is cursed with a vexing ability to see visions he can't explain.
Terrified he may be going mad, he must keep the disturbing skill secret. But when it proves helpful in tracking his would-be killer, he has no choice but to embrace the newfound power. The retrocognition leads him to the house of a man recently deceased, where he encounters the clever and intriguing Miss Matilda Wren—who may be able to help him solve the many questions raised by the attack.
The death of Tilda's cousin has left her and her beloved grandmother in a precarious financial position when she discovers their investments have gone missing. Between the lost money and the mysterious Lord Ravenhurst's incessant queries, Tilda begins to wonder if her cousin may have been murdered. Desperate to determine what happened, she'll exhaust every possible line of inquiry to stave off destitution. For a price, Tilda agrees to work with the earl to uncover the truth, though she suspects he's hiding a dark secret.
As their investigation grows, so does the body count. Can they trust each other enough to expose the puppet master pulling the strings? Or will the villain's malevolent machinations end with more than a whisper of death?

Story
August 1816. England is in the grip of what will become known as the Year Without a Summer. Facing the twin crises of a harvest-destroying volcanic winter and the economic disruption caused by the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the British monarchy finds itself haunted by the looming threat of bloody riots not seen since the earliest days of the French Revolution. Amidst the turmoil, a dead man is found hanging upside down by one leg in an abandoned chapel, his hands tied behind his back. The pose eerily echoes the image depicted on a tarot card known as Le Pendu, the Hanged Man.

Story
The dilemma of the outsider in an alien society, and the gap in understanding between cultures, recurrent themes of Paul Bowles’s writings, are dramatized with brutal honesty in this novel set in Fez, Morocco, during that country’s 1954 nationalist uprising. Totally relevant to today’s political situation in the Middle East and elsewhere, richly descriptive of its setting, and uncompromising in its characterizations, The Spider’s House is perhaps Bowles’s best, most beautifully subtle novel.

She likes the scenery, the easy pace, the quirky, quick-witted locals. Everything - except having one of her clients drop dead at the statue of fabled fishmonger, Molly Malone. Most restaurant critics notch up their share of enemies. Elizabeth Darr, however, was a well-loved international star. Great story but hard to deal with the narration
This was a well thought out story, and I enjoyed the paranormal intrigue. However, the male narrator’s audible swallowing throughout the story was extremely distracting, and I couldn’t wait for his part to be over. The female narration was done very well, and I would prefer to just listen to her. Maybe it’s just me, but I should not be able to hear a narrator swallowing in between sentences.

An Entertaining Historical Mystery
I enjoy books that feature women who are ahead of their time. Women who dare to try and break barriers. This was a well-developed and well-written story that was engaging and entertaining. The main two characters were likable, and one looks forward to meeting them again as they continue to combine their talents in solving mysteries and crimes. And of course, their developing feelings for one another. The narration was perfection.

I Need More!
As an avid historical mystery reader, I am always looking for great new series in the genre, and this book not only checks all the boxes for me but promises much more to come. The characters are well developed, and the mystery engaging. Ravenhurst's "gift" or "curse" adds an interesting twist without dominating the investigation or the story. I cannot wait to spend more time with Raven, Wren, and their households.
I am always leary of multi-povs in the story. Add in two narrators, and I am doubly so, but the narration is perfection and brings these characters to life.
