About this listen

Ice is in her blood.

Eighteen-year-old Waterrunner Eira Landan lives her life in the shadows - the shadow of her older brother, of her magic’s whispers, and of the person she accidentally killed. She’s the most unwanted apprentice in the Tower of Sorcerers until the day she decides to step out and compete for a spot in the Tournament of Five Kingdoms.

Pitted against the best sorcerers in the Empire, Eira fights to be one of four champions. Excelling in the trials has its rewards. She’s invited to the royal court with the “Prince of the Tower”, discovers her rare talent for forbidden magic, and at midnight, Eira secretly meets with a handsome elfin ambassador.

But, Eira soon learns, no reward is without risk. As she comes into the spotlight, so too do the skeletons of a past she hadn’t even realized was haunting her. Eira went into the trials ready for a fight. Ready to win. She wasn’t ready for what it would cost her. No one expected the candidates might not make it out with their lives.

A Trial of Sorcerers is the first book in a brand new, young adult, epic fantasy series intended for listeners who love stories involving: sorcerer competitions, slow-burn romance, adventures to distant lands, and elemental magic. The story is set in the Air Awakens universe, but is it’s own unique story. Listeners new to the universe can start here!

Good start to this series

I came into this series relatively cold. I mean, I did not read any reviews and I'm not even sure if I read the summary before beginning. All in all though, I enjoyed the book. We get to meet Eira Landan, a young sorcerer who has been in the shadow of her brother for most of her life. Part of that is because she had an accident controlling her magic 3 years prior and no one seems to want to let her forget it. Yes, it did lead to a death, but there were also some mitigating circumstances.

The other thing that is odd about her is that she hears voices. Well, whispers. THAT, is not something that is supposed to happen at this academy for sorcerers. While her brother seemed to believe that she actually was hearing the voices, it becomes clear later on that he may have just been pacifying her.

Everything comes to a head when there is a tournament announced for the sorcerers to compete for a spot in the Tournament of Five Kingdoms. The prize for the winners is to take the top sorcerers in each field to a major city to continue to compete. This city is a place that Eira has always had a longing to go to. She has felt an almost pull to get there so that is what makes her step out of the shadows to compete - against her brother no less - to try to win her spot.

That is what starts the ball rolling because not everything is what it seems and Eira's magic, well, there is a reason that she is hearing these voices.

So- no spoilers. Let's just say that it was a fun and interesting introduction to a new series.

Reading

The story is good. I guess it will get better as the story starts to unfold in the following books. The reading, however, was another story. I found it so choppy and fast or hurried that I had to reduce the speed to understand the spoken works better and to had a better intonation of the reading.
After reducing the speed, I found the audiobook more enjoyable.

Loved the plot easy listen.

I wish one part had been an illusion or apart of the trail. Oh well, great other than that.

Elise Kova does it again!

This book contains a really beautifully crafted world. I loved the characters and was invested in their growth. However, I completely hated the main characters family. They were super self-centered, and only cares about themselves.

Excellent Series Starter

I’m an avid fan of the Air Awakens Series so I’ve been eager to start this new series set in the world of Solaris. What I didn’t realize is that it would be prudent to read the Vortex Chronicles first because there are spoilers for that series here. And, I’m guessing, probably more so before starting A Hunt of Shadows. Even though I’m excited to begin the next book, I’m seriously considering completing the Vortex books first.

That being said, I really enjoyed Eira’s story and look forward to her continuing journey. I also really loved being back in the Solaris Empire with my favorite characters from the Air Awakens series. The narration was excellent and I look forward to continuing the series.

I recommend this story for lovers of elemental magic, tournaments, political intrigue, and enemies-to-lovers.
