Paste Magazine Pick for Best New YA Books of August 2022
“An addictive, action-packed, scorcher of a read!” ―#1 New York Times bestselling author Alyson Noël
Some shadows protect you…others will kill you in this dazzling new fantasy series from award-winning author Abigail Owen.
Everything about my life is a lie. As a hidden twin princess, born second, I have only one purpose―to sacrifice my life for my sister if death comes for her. I’ve been living under the guise of a poor, obscure girl of no standing, slipping into the palace and into the role of the true princess when danger is present.
Now the queen is dead and the ageless King Eidolon has sent my sister a gift―an eerily familiar gift―and a proposal to wed. I don’t trust him, so I do what I was born to do and secretly take her place on the eve of the coronation. Which is why, when a figure made of shadow kidnaps the new queen, he gets me by mistake.
As I try to escape, all the lies start to unravel. And not just my lies. The Shadowraith who took me has secrets of his own. He struggles to contain the shadows he wields―other faces, identities that threaten my very life.
Winter is at the walls. Darkness is looming. And the only way to save my sister and our dominion is to kill Eidolon…and the Shadowraith who has stolen my heart.

What a surprise!

However I am curious to see what happens next so I will continue this series to see how this plays out.
I enjoyed the concept of 2 twin princesses, one who will protect her sister as his her duty but then is kidnapped And has to protect both their identities while trying to escape. I love the characters they were relatible and at times so funny in the way they reacted with each other. I loved her stronge snarky attitude to him and his almost infatuated exasperation with her.
Not sure if I would necessarily recommend this yet or not.
The fantasy world and character development

This so easily could've been a four-star for me. But...I didn't love it. While it was intriguing, there was something missing. The build-up and tension are spot on. The pacing is slow, and when you stretch a book into a trilogy, this sometimes happens. The character development wasn't detailed. I'm assuming this changes as we progress through each book. While there were moments that drew me in, the hot and cold drove me away. I don't feel an overwhelming need to jump into the next book. I can assume what happens next. There aren't twists and turns and those my friends are what keep me glued to the pages.
Mixed Feelings

But man I loved this book. I am going to listen to the other two in the series. I will say, that I do not usually gravitate towards YA authors. But I am trying to make myself try new authors off my apollycon 2025 list, and Abigail Owen will be there. The synopsis of this first book in this trilogy intrigued me enough to put it on my TBR, and the fact that it was a free audiobook with my membership made it a home run.
I am a sucker for Fantansy/Romantasy with interesting worlds and great character building and I do not feel like this boom disappointed at all. You learn about why female twins run in the royal line, and why they hide one away. But it's Meren, (who book this POV is from) the second twin that gets kidnapped, and honestly ends up on a grand adventure. She learns more about the other dominons around her, the people that she were told that were vanished, and the safe haven they have found. With her kidnapper looking exactly like her sworn enemy being the one that has provided that haven for them all. There are so many twist and turns throughout the entire book. There is a singular spicy scene, that is not very descriptive, but enough that you get the idea. I am looking forward to continuing in this world that Abigail Owen has created!!

Enjoyed every minute of it

Luis Moreno and Samara Naeymi did a phenomenal job narrating and breathing life into the story and the characters with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly. While the story is written as a single POV, this is a duet recording. Listening to the narration added beautiful dimension to an already fantastic story.
A wonderful start to an epic fantasy
