About this listen

A YEAR OF RAVENS

Britannia: land of mist and magic clinging to the western edge of the Roman Empire. A red-haired queen named Boudica led her people in a desperate rebellion against the might of Rome, an epic struggle destined to consume heroes and cowards, young and old, Roman and Briton . . . and these are their stories.

A calculating queen foresees the fires of rebellion in a king's death.

A neglected slave girl seizes her own courage as Boudica calls for war.

An idealistic tribune finds manhood in a brutal baptism of blood and slaughter.

A death-haunted Druid challenges the gods themselves to ensure victory for his people.

A conflicted young warrior finds himself torn between loyalties to tribe and to Rome.

An old champion struggles for everlasting glory in the final battle against the legions.

A pair of fiery princesses fight to salvage the pieces of their mother’s dream as the ravens circle.

A novel in seven parts, overlapping stories of warriors and peacemakers, queens and slaves, Romans and Britons who cross paths during Boudica’s epic rebellion. But who will survive to see the dawn of a new Britannia, and who will fall to feed the ravens?

I enjoyed this book, and am always fascinated by historical fiction set in the Roman Empire. The idea of an anthology compiled by a group of authors is interesting, and I have listened to/read books by at least half of the authors who contributed. However, I did not find it as seamless as some reviewers said, but rather found that some repetition could have been edited out. The narration was superb.

Good, but could have been better

I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to keep up with this book as it jumps from character to character. However it is so well done and beautifully tied together that it wasn’t an issue. The story its self was amazing and the tie ins will leave you stunned! Every last detail in this book counted. I
Finished it in under a week, I simply could not get enough of it. The narrators did an absolute amazing job as well. Love love love every single part!

This should be a movie!!

I liked hearing the story from different viewpoints of the different characters. I felt inspired more than once, close to tears often, and horrified by the telling of the truth of battle and war.

Loved this book! Characters and voices are excellent

Because the writers had relied upon some excellent sources of historical proportions which explains why the reader could almost hear the sounds of battle.

I could hear clashing swords.

A novel approach to storytelling and this cohort of authors executed their missions admirably. I appreciate the difficult task of editing to make sure the overarching storyline is preserved and well articulated. Knowing the mystery of this chapter of British history is opaque, I enjoyed each author’s interpretation from his/her viewpoint. As always Saskia Maarleveld’s narration was a delight to the ears.

A novel and successful approach to storytelling

Although different authors, the story is seamless. You want to know what happens to each character.

I have known about Boudicca for some time however when I’ve mentioned her name most have never heard of her rebellion. Ravens approaches the story from many vantage points which in the end gives the reader a full circumference of the events which could’ve taken place.

This is one of the few stories on tape that I could not get into.
