About this listen

Medea was destined for power. What she got was revenge.
Medea, daughter of King Aeetes of Colchis, longs for a different life. Since childhood, she has been separated from her sister, shunned by her mother, and beaten and tormented by her brother and father. All because Medea was born with a unique and seemingly dangerous talent: witchcraft.
But when a dashing young hero, Jason, arrives to claim the famed Golden Fleece that her father fiercely protects, Medea sees her opportunity for escape. In offering to help Jason overcome the obstacles that stand between him and his prize in return for taking her away from Colchis, she sets in motion a journey that will test every ounce of her strength, magic and loyalty; a journey that will see her battle monsters, dethrone kings and fall in love with a man who is not the hero we all know from story; a journey that will inevitably end in betrayal and bloodshed.

As someone who also experienced childhood trauma, I could not help but to draw comparisons between some bad choices that Medea makes and my own. What a fantastically full character— I hated to leave her!

A complicated villain

The narration is great. A bit overpowered and dramatic in a few places where it's not expected, but it's not a bad thing.

The book is... wow. The story is well written. Shakespeare would be impressed by the drama and tragedy woven though this story. Hewlett's writing is full of prose; constructed so beautifully that it feels as if the main character is in love with the world around her.

This book will have you asking yourself time and again... what really makes a monster?

A Tragedy of Greek Proportion

I had a hard time getting through the tragedies. I wanted to hop into to story and help Medea out. I love that the author kept pushing forward. I appreciated the ending.

Tragedy with a feminist twist

This story reaches and masters the story of so many women. A story that demonstrates the breadth of her power and the depth of her loyalty. The cruelty of humankind and the double standards that exist between powerful men and they women the exploit to gain it.

Incredible narration, compelling story that is so relevant still today. ❤️‍🩹💔❤️‍🩹

An intriguing view of developing madness brought on by a lifetime of abuse. The narration makes the story even better.

Excellent Narrator

If you know the story of Medea, then you know there will be pain, sadness, and horror. There were difficult times listening to gaslighting and narcnarcissistic personality traits of one of the other main characters. It is painful to be so fully engulfed in an abusive relationship. However this was so powerful and well read that despite the discomfort at times, I think this is a story that needs to be heard from her perspective. Highly recommend.

Powerful though painful at times

This was fantastic. Thought provoking and tragic, with hope and strength that resonate deeply. There’s a Medea in each of us and we’ve all known that darkness that allows others to shine. A story for all unseen heroes that are tragically misunderstood.

An embrace of every woman’s shadow self

Thank you, Rosie Hewlett for telling this timeless tragedy in such unflinchingly raw and gorgeous prose.

Besides this being a well written novel, the narrator was fantastic. Her inflection was perfect and conveyed the characters' moods, emotions and personalities in a way that made each character come to life. It is a book I would recommend to anyone.

Great Story; Even Better Narrator
