About this listen

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye comes a riveting short story about an impossible connection across two centuries that could make the difference between peace or war.

Yorkshire, 1943. Lily Baines, a bright young debutante increasingly ground down by an endless war, has traded in her white gloves for a set of headphones. It’s her job to intercept enemy naval communications and send them to Bletchley Park for decryption.

One night, she picks up a transmission that isn’t code at all—it’s a cry for help.

An American ship is taking heavy fire in the North Atlantic—but no one else has reported an attack, and the information relayed by the young US officer, Matt Jackson, seems all wrong. The contact that Lily has made on the other end of the radio channel says it’s…2023.

Across an eighty-year gap, Lily and Matt must find a way to help each other: Matt to convince her that the war she’s fighting can still be won, and Lily to help him stave off the war to come. As their connection grows stronger, they both know there’s no telling when time will run out on their inexplicable link.

Critic reviews

“The touch of fantasy interjected into this compelling audiobook is a unique departure from author Kate Quinn's usual historical fiction.… The narrators make the characters so real that listeners can suspend disbelief and feel their tension, grit, and cleverness. Both narrators display considerable linguistic talent as they portray these heroes with warmth and bravado.”AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner

short and amazing

Short on point and with an amazing narrator and story that will bring so much in such a short time, I even wanted to keep listening to more about the story, I wish Kate release a whole book about this amazing journey.

Two stories that come intertwine even if the date and year are not right
it is 1943 in Yorkshire and Lily Banes is ready to hang her dresses and gloves to start a career on the radio transmitters a job that will change her life and the life of many.

Matt a young US Officer that is about to get killed in the year 2023 gets a call under a radio transmitter that he thought was a joke around her friend and colleagues until things started to make more sense believing what Lily just informed him Matt has to work fast enough to save his own life.

The narrations by Saskia Maarleveld and Andrew Gibson were amazing I love how they really made us feel that suspense and that angst whenever they were talking over the phone.

EPIC Story!

was a most excellent short story. Maybe the best I've heard.
What he wanted the brick to say, was the best part.

Well done!

For what, these days, is an overdone trope the "voices through time" element of this story was excellently done.

Fun and Fantastic

What a fun story! My only wish is that it isn’t longer. Kate Quinn continues to create engaging stories.

Excellent, but I wish it was longer

Nice time travel and WWII themes. It is a really interesting combination, and I like the two narrators. It made for an interesting listen.

Past and (sorta) present meet. I really wish this had been a novel

Good story!

What a great find! I loved this short story and even though it was written into the story line, I appreciated that they avoided the cliché romantic ending. Just a good story!

5 Stars!

I love Kate Quinn’s historical fiction novels and she’s shown that she can also write a fully developed and entertaining short story. The fantastical time-travel element was a unique added element to her well-trod WW2 setting. I enjoyed it all-around. Great performance by the narrators, as well.

Fun, original, clever

This is a nice respite from long stories where you lose track of who’s who. Just two characters in an interesting “what if” situation. Both likable, no murder and mayhem, but also not sappy Hallmark. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
