About this listen
The ATLAS mechanized battle suits are the pinnacle of military technology, boasting awesome destructive power - but what is behind the armor is only human. Rade Galaal, elite soldier and ATLAS operator, has been tested - and broken - by savage battles and devastating losses. Now, an old enemy poses a new threat.
The vile insectile aliens that once threatened Earth have regrouped to engineer a new apocalyptic assault on mankind, and the ATLAS mechs are called to defend the very survival of the human race.
On the desolate, far-flung moons of Tau Ceti II, there will come a reckoning. Earth's adversaries are legion, and the planet's soldiers - for all of their rigorous training and amazing ordnance - are only flesh and blood. But they possess a defiant will to survive. Will Rade find the strength to reforge his shattered spirit and defeat the alien onslaught before all is lost?

Story
Rade Galaal and his team of special operators are deployed to a colony under attack by a strange new alien race. Their mission: find the extraterrestrial base and destroy it. The operation should be easy, given that his men pilot Brigand mechs: massive, 25-foot-tall war machines armed to the teeth with electrolasers, rockets, incendiary throwers, and more. But it's not easy. Rade and his team soon find themselves in over their heads. Surrounded by an entire world of enraged aliens, they must rely on their wits, their training, and their mechs to survive.

Aliens exist...and, as it turns out, most of them aren’t that friendly. Jacob Brown wasn’t even born yet the first time they attacked Earth. He was only 14 the second time it happened. When Earth finally came together and fielded its first spaceborne military, Jacob didn’t hesitate to volunteer. Serving aboard a mighty starship, he’d be able to defend his planet - and his family - when, inevitably, they came again.

A surprisingly good listen
When I first purchased this audiobook, I was sceptical as most of the reviews that I saw were negative. Upon listening to the audiobook, however, I found it to be amazing. I loved every second of it and the narrator did a fantastic job differentiating the characters. I really do not understand the hate for this book.

ATLAS 3: Join Mil SpecOps & fight in an ATLAS mech
SciFi Mech Thriller: that’s ATLAS 3 in 3 words.
** This review has no spoilers.**
Lots of real life U.S. military personnel are apparently fans of this series. ATLAS 3 has shades of American Sniper and a James Patterson thriller, while in another way it reminds me of John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War, or Heinlein’s Starship Troopers. ATLAS 3 comprises some exciting military Spec Ops missions set in a futuristic Sci Fi environment. The tech and combat use proper military terminology and tactics, and are as realistic as you can imagine, given that this is Sci Fi. The use of technologically advanced mechs is used judiciously, adding to the complexity of the action scenes.
Once again in this instalment, Berkrot proves a wonder with a microphone, swapping personalities and accents and tone instantaneously as he switches from character to character. I laughed when reading the comedic scenes, and these are funny all over again when Berkrot orates them. I even got some jokes that I didn’t find funny while reading, because Berkrot reads them the way they are supposed to be read.
The main Spec Ops missions of Digger and Outrigger squad make up the bulk of the novel, and provide a great deal of suspense and thrills as Tahoe and Rade attempt to complete their missions. It always surprises me how much I laugh when listening to Isaac Hooke’s books, as he has a great sense of humor that Berkrot plays well as he expresses it expertly through the characters. The combat and the tension never cease, and the characters Rade, Tahoe and Shaw are very well developed throughout.
Isaac Hooke is a great writer, and 47 North has done well to have Peter Berkrot narrate ATLAS 3. Will there be an ATLAS 4? Fingers crossed!

Too Long and Repetitive
Would you try another book from Isaac Hooke and/or Peter Berkrot?
I might try number 4. The problem with this book is the complete lack of plot complexity. This is a 15 hour narrative of one horrible battle after another with no surcease. No human or MOTH could really withstand what Hooke created here. Good stories require a lot more than just blowing things up, getting to cliff hangers, the resolving very predictably. The first two Atlas stories were much better crafted than this one. I couldn't tell the difference here between hour one and hour 10 or hour 15 of listening. It became annoying and boring.
Has ATLAS 3 turned you off from other books in this genre?
No.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from ATLAS 3?
I would cut out at least 4 hours of repetitive, sounds-the-same battles against slugs, crabs, vants, etc. This book suffers from the lack of good editing.
Any additional comments?
Mr. Berkrot did a reasonable job reading a lousy manuscript. Hope he gets better material next time.
