About this listen

Called "everything a 20th-century war memoir could possibly be" by the New York Times, this national best seller by Colonel David H. Hackworth presents a vivid and powerful portrait of a life of patriotism.

From age 15 to 40, David Hackworth devoted himself to the US Army and fast became a living legend. In 1971, however, he appeared on television to decry the doomed war effort in Vietnam. With About Face, he has written what many Vietnam veterans have called the most important book of their generation.

From Korea to Berlin, from the Cuban missile crisis to Vietnam, Hackworth's story is that of an exemplary patriot, played out against the backdrop of the changing fortunes of America and the American military. It is also a stunning indictment of the Pentagon's fundamental misunderstanding of the Vietnam conflict and of the bureaucracy of self-interest that fueled the war.

New York Times best seller. A Military Book Club Main Selection. A number-one Amazon.com best seller in Korean War Personal Narratives.

About Face - About Leadership

This book cements my views on leadership...leaders must be bold, not too scared to make a mistake and more concerned for those they lead then they are themselves. While education is a good thing...it’s not everything. Bold Brave Folks with street smarts should never be discarded or marginalized. While I may not agree with every view the author had or every tactic he took, on the whole, I find our outlooks simpatico and I learned a lot. RIP Hack

Pinnacle of leadership books

Doubling as a Vietnam and Korea war memoir, this book is, by far, The gold standard in books on leadership.

A masterpiece

Incredible story of Colonel Hackworth’s rise from grunt to commander, the lessons learned in battle and the difference in fighting for country versus personal gain. One of the best books I’ve read/listened too.

40.5 hours that everyone must hear.

Jocko Willink talks about this book so much I had to check it out and now I kick myself for not doing it sooner. Absolutely eye opening in formation about Korea and Vietnam wars. Everyone in America needs to read or listen to this book.

Awesome book for all leaders to read!

Every leader in the military and in public safety should strive read this book and put it on their professional reading list to give their subordinates. It's nice. There is much to be learned reading about about failed leadership and great leadership; both are covered in this Work.

A detailed story of one of the best combat leaders in modern American infantry history

An incredible memoir that spans 3 wars from one of the best combat leaders in modern American infantry history. As a former Marine 0311 Infantryman, I believe this story should be mandatory reading for every infantryman, leader, and staff officer in the military.

He details the problems in the Army bureaucracy and how the military is often fighting the last war and rarely taking the current theater of operations as a new experience that requires new tactics. Men like Hack save a lot of American lives through proficient leadership decisions in theaters of war.

This is the second book by Hackworth I have read and one of the best. Great book end to end.
