good book, skip the audio

the random bursts of song were obnoxious

however, good overview for someone who doesn't know the timeline of the civil war!

Loved it

I've read this book for a class project and I love it. The story makes you wish you could go back in time to the Civil war and experience the past and all that comes with it. 6/5 stars!

Step into the Civil War eta

Hunt does an excellent job helping you receive more than the history textbooks can give. She helps you experience the tension of the 1860s through the yes of a 10yr old boy on a farm in southern Illinois. There are lots of general names used and one can get lost in all the names, but it is a good retelling of that era nonetheless.

Terrific At Any Age

Very moving. I felt like I was bawling for the last hour of the book. A very impressive work of family (and U.S.) history. Recommended to just about anyone.

Historically Enlightening

Very well written - enlightening us to our not-all-that-distant past! I truly enjoyed this, my second book by Irene Hunt. The narration was great too!

Excellent for young boys

I really liked the narrerator and hoe he made authentic accents and voices for the characters. told from the point of view of a boy 9-13yo. Even though they are a Union State/family, part of the Confederate understanding is touched upon as one brother of the family fights for the South. And there are clear examples of generals and locations, where if you wanted to pull out maps and follow, you could. it was great, my 10 yo boy listened to the whole thing in 2 days. Highly recommend.
