About this listen

The author of Fight Club takes America beyond our darkest dreams in this timely satire.

People pass the word only to those they trust most: Adjustment Day is coming. They've been reading a mysterious blue-black book and memorizing its directives. They are ready for the reckoning.

In this ingeniously comic work, the author's first novel in four years, Chuck Palahniuk does what he does best: skewer the absurdities in our society. Smug, geriatric politicians hatch a nasty fate for the burgeoning population of young males; working-class men dream of burying the elites; and professors propound theories that offer students only the bleakest future. When it arrives, Adjustment Day inaugurates the new, disunited states. In this mind-blowing novel, Palahniuk - an equal-opportunity offender - fearlessly makes real the logical conclusion of every separatist fantasy, alternative fact, and conspiracy theory lurking in the American psyche.

fun concepts on a windey path

Overall a fine book and a good listen. I am a fan of Palahniuk's work; favorites being lullaby, invisible monsters, survivor, and rant. This book just didn't grab my attention as well as those but I still enjoyed the concepts and story. It's worth a listen as a fan but if you've never read Palahniuk's work before start on something else.

I enjoy Palahniuk, but ..

struggled to finish, I really don't know what story was trying to happen...wish I would've listened as soon as I got it so I could've returned it after a few hours.
The narrator didn't help much either..

Chuck's best

If you're a reasonable person in these times of ideological strife, you'll love this book.

Definitely clever but probably better to read.

I finished the book a week ago, I wanted to let the story resonate with me for a bit. I am a huge Chuckie P. Fan. I’ve read them all, some more than once. I’ve never listened to one before and I think that is where my iffy feelings are coming from. As usual the book is extremely clever and well thought out from beginning to end. Every character’s personality traits stay their course and no part of any character is lost. I love the subtle things that pop in (for instance: Walter running through a “scene” randomly). Hilarious! I thought about the book
All day and for days after finishing. It blows my mind the way Chuck can think 20 steps ahead and convey it effortlessly to the reader. If this is your first Chuck Palahniuk I suggest you go out and track them ALL down, you won’t be disappointed!
The CONS:
It was extremely annoying hearing the clever character nuances. One example: “And he was like....and she was like.... and I was like....” UGH! That would be better heard in your own voice in your own head rather than hearing out loud. It is no fault of the narrator, just my opinion. There were several other instances like this in the book that annoyed the shit out of me. It ALMOST ruined the book for me. I almost gave up on it three times. I’m glad I didn’t, the story is amazing. I wish I’d read it instead.

Starts strong, Ends in a whimper

The first half of the book is a great example of what fight club would have been like if Tyler Durden Wrote Mein Kampf. Unlike fight club though, Adjustment Day does not end when the revolution succeeds. So what we're left with is a bunch of characters you don't care about living in the satirical new america. If this was a sequel to fight club and actually had Tyler Durden as the
leader, I might have liked it a bit more.

Thanks Chuck!

You never disappoint. The words of Talbet ring True, genius or madman, who cares - we all just need a unified theory about something.

really? this reader? for this book?? really???

I'm a huge CP fan. I love his odd, obscure, strange, uniquely fearless take on our world. And -- until now -- i loved listening to him. But now???? Seriously???? who chose this reader??? who produced this reader??? I finished the book on paper (ok, ipad) because mr. allen's singsong, repetitive, single-inflection reading was making me more insane than any Chuck Palahniuk writing ever could. I couldn't handle it. I couldn't stand it: The same inflections, the same tone, the same monotonous pattern. Please. make. it. stop. I even listened to the previews of his other books. I must be in the minority. This man is prolific. Not for the last couple of years, but active, none the less. his singsong voice seems to work in the previews i listened to. not so here. if you want to read palahniuk, listen to his others, but do yourself a favor: turn to the page for this one.

I'm quite disappointed in you, Chuck

Half baked social satire wedded to conspiracy theory with bits taken from everything from Canticle for Leibowitz to Sheri Tepper's Arbai novels. The narrator made the best he could of a bad lot. I'd love to hear him read a worthwhile book.

I expected more...

It was a good book. I read and listened to it using Kindle and Audible. I was a huge fan of Fight Club and maybe that is why I went into Adjustment Day with such high expectations. Overall...it was a good read. But there were parts that I really didn't care for.

Quality Chuck

If you're a fan of this author and haven't checked out this one yet, it won't let you down. Uniquely voiced and clever as always. It sort of fizzles story wise but the journey is well worth it. The narration is solid.
