Publisher's summary

A relentless disease. No cure. And no way to stop it.

The Alt Apocalypse is the newest ground-breaking series from Tom Abrahams.

It explores survival under the most extreme circumstances, but with a twist (and no cliffhangers). This series, which can be heard in any order, features the same core characters in each complete story. But every book dunks them into a new, alternate apocalypse: a nuclear holocaust, an earthquake, a flood, a wildfire, a hurricane, a plague, and even zombies.

Different heroes will emerge in each novel. Different characters will survive and perish. Your favorite character dies in one book? He or she will be back in the next. In the end you'll unwind the loose thread that connects every character and every stand-alone story.

In Affliction, Abrahams tells the story of a mysterious team of researchers, four college friends, an ex-con, a lonely fry cook, and a secretive group of prepared civilians as they each battle to survive in southern California after an outbreak of a new, deadly disease with no known cure.

Can they find a way to stop it? Can they survive in an afflicted world?

2nd best in the series so far

So far this is my second favorite of the series (the first still is number one book in my book). This is an interesting version and the characters have a lot more to grow in the story as it's not as quick as a flood or fire. The choices made do seem like what the characters would do since this is the fourth time interacting with them. We also learn more about the revelation from the last book and hope the next two unpack that more (seems like it will). This apocalypse feels very more apocalyptic and it never seems over the top. There is good tension and it only breaks to another character at the right time. It doesn't always end on a cliffhanger so that you want to skip the next character to see what will happen then go back. There is one interaction with three characters and maybe a bear that seems really out of left field and doesn't seem to do much. I was questioning why it was included and what it added. Yet still, I'm excited for the next one and will continue to read until the end...of the world. Final Grade - A-

I love this series

this series of books has represented a unique approach to the apocalyptic literature that I have been enjoying for a number of years now. I find it absolutely fascinating that repeated apocalyptic events include some of the same characters. In this last book, there has been a unique sci-fi approach connecting the other books, and other iterations, as they are called. initially I didn't like it , because I want pure apocalyptic literature without a science fiction take. But, I actually find that it adds some depth and interest to the types of stories that I've been repeatedly reading by different authors for the last 6 years. I can't wait for the next one

A man made virus or is it

Yes it a story of a group of people who are in all the books some die and then are alive in the next book sounds good but as you listen to the audibles you start to see a pattern first nuclear, then flooding and now a virus all the same people but different lives and death. This is a made made virus that goes wrong and start killing everyone the main characters and people around them. You see a government that goes crazy and start killing and burning the sick or dieing all over LA and other places in the US.
The one draw back with this audible the listener is left hanging wanting to know what happen to the core group of the main characters we know 3 to 4 have died but the others are either well or maybe dieing but then the audible . As you listen you find it was plan to see how people would survive in different events but doing it in a simulations they are alive thru all events and previous experiences are dejove or a nightmare that comes from headaches and other systems.
I hope the next audible will pick up were this one stopped and start really pulling all the experiences into a outcome that settles the lives of the core group who have both lived, experienced and died from from these scientific experiments

if you started with book 4 you'd be wondering what they were talking about the deja vu.

Best one of the series

Wow, this one was so great. It had so much going for it. I have read the other 3 in the series and those were great but this one really pushed the series over the top for me. It brought all of the stories together in such a unique way, which I had just accepted things were the way they were and no explaination was required... but we got an awesome one. The characters we have grown to know were all there and I still had my favourites. I loved the chaos and worry that was instilled in this scenario. The tension was there all the way through. The performance was really good as always and you just know what Pierce is going to bring. His voices stayed consistent throughout the whole series and his voice brings something great to this series. I just can't wait to see what is in store for the next audiobook. This has become one of my most anticipated series so far this year. You know you are always in for a creative and wild ride with Abrhams.

A good marriage of current and overall plot

One of the things that bugged me about earlier books was that it not only felt isolated (i.e. no in-story linkage to previous entries), but that each tale felt rather lackluster. In the fire one, the rains come and it's all over. Things never really seemed to "go" anywhere.

In this, and the previous book, Tom Abrahams is starting to interweave the stories and provide an overall plot. I don't know if this was the intention from the beginning or if his editors/fans/or internal voice told him to switch it up, but I'm grateful (and since this story no longer opens with saying you can read them in any order, I tend to think it was a late course-change).

Affliction spends time following the lives of our usual characters as they deal with the devastation of a plague, and at the same time, starts to peel back the layers revealing what's been going on behind the scenes to create this world of endless apocalypses. We also begin to find out what links our characters together (and there's even a nod, and some humanization of the poor woman who seems to die at the beginning of every book).

This is an entry you'll definitely want to read/listen to after the others, but it's one of the better ones in term of overall plot and how interesting the "surviving" parts of the tale were.

As usual, great narration from Kevin Pierce.

My current Favorite Series

I like the concept of this series a lot: Same characters, new circumstances. Who will thrive?
Great narration adds to the enjoyment.

I don't know what to think of this series....
I follow and like a few of the characters, it's just so bleak...
