About this listen

An inventive and riveting epic saga, After the Flood signals the arrival of an extraordinary new talent.

A little more than a century from now, our world has been utterly transformed. After years of slowly overtaking the continent, rising floodwaters have obliterated America’s great coastal cities and then its heartland, leaving nothing but an archipelago of mountaintop colonies surrounded by a deep expanse of open water.

Stubbornly independent Myra and her precocious seven-year-old daughter, Pearl, fish from their small boat, the Bird, visiting dry land only to trade for supplies and information in the few remaining outposts of civilization. For seven years, Myra has grieved the loss of her oldest daughter, Row, who was stolen by her father after a monstrous deluge overtook their home in Nebraska. Then, in a violent confrontation with a stranger, Myra suddenly discovers that Row was last seen in a far-off encampment near the Arctic Circle. Throwing aside her usual caution, Myra and Pearl embark on a perilous voyage into the icy northern seas, hoping against hope that Row will still be there.

On their journey, Myra and Pearl join forces with a larger ship, and Myra finds herself bonding with her fellow seekers who hope to build a safe haven together in this dangerous new world. But secrets, lust, and betrayals threaten their dream, and after their fortunes take a shocking - and bloody - turn, Myra can no longer ignore the question of whether saving Row is worth endangering Pearl and her fellow travelers.

A compulsively listenable novel of dark despair and soaring hope, After the Flood is a magnificent, action packed, and sometimes frightening odyssey laced with wonder - an affecting and wholly original saga both redemptive and astonishing.

After the Flood

interesting concept but in the end felt like characters and story were undeveloped. Story meandered everywhere and not in an interesting way. Main character not inspiring at all and I found it hard to believe that any man would be willing to die for her or even want her as difficult and personality free as she was written. Anticlimactic ending. And I'm sorry but I found the narrator kickedme out of the story more often than held me. The way she said the word else with a t--eltse--was more than annoying. i couldnt have written it but author needed tondelve more deeply into describing tribes, ports, rather than relying on hints, generalities and describing knife fights etc. more like she is writing a manuscript as outline for a tv series.

Nyeh

I
I listened to it because the idea of living on the water intrigued me. I had a lot of questions about the boat and vegetables. This wasn't the book for those types of questions. I found the book mildly entertaining, but it also took me three times longer to listen to it.

Really good!!

I actually really enjoyed this. The characters were great and the plot what well thought-out. The only issue I had was with the ending. I felt like it just ended too quickly without really solving all the characters' problems.

Pretty Good story

This book had a fairly good story, but some areas could have been written better. More detail about sailing and proper terms would be good.
The author goes into detail about her daughters thin hair and skin condition secondary to scurvy, then it is never mentioned it again.
The irritability of the protagonist and the whining of her daughter were somewhat distracting. However the storyline hung together well enough to keep me listening.
The daughters abilities and use of snakes was interesting.

Starts good, descends into whine fest

The story and heroine start strong, she descends into whining for the 2nd half of the book and you begin hoping she'll drown soon. By the end you'd like to be the one drowning her.
