About this listen

When Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin boldly escaped from Alcatraz prison on June 11, 1962, it is widely believed that they succumbed to the waters of San Francisco Bay, though no trace of the men has ever been found, only their makeshift raft.

In this reexamination of the escape and its aftermath, the Anglin brothers' nephew presents compelling evidence that his uncles did, in fact, survive, and eventually made their way to Brazil, where they married and had children. Using official, government documents showing how mobster Mickey Cohen may have been involved in the escape, some revealing letters from fellow inmate Whitey Bulger, and recorded testimony from the person who facilitated their escape to Brazil, the authors make a strong case for the Anglin brothers' survival.

In addition, a 1975 photograph of the brothers in Brazil has overcome all challenges to its authenticity by skeptics. This book provides a plausible outcome to one of America's enduring mysteries.

An excellent account of the life and times of the only people to escape from Alcatraz. Well written, documented and read, I take this to be the one true account of the escape.
I will read it again!

Incredible!

The Anglin brothers had very little formal education. The author, a nephew of the Anglins, keeps the family tradition alive by writing an interesting story at a junior high level. There is almost no character or scene development, rather, the readers are given one sentence and expected to fill in all of the gaps to see things the way the author does. Did the Anglins escape and live out their lives in Brazil? I don't know, but it is a fun concept. The author, however, has no doubts based on circumstantial evidence, a lack of facts in any direction, and his own blatant desire to believe they did. Overall, it was a good listen, but not great or in depth.

Interesting story, but not developed

I think there were a lot of literary liberties taken, however, very compelling story to be believe “they made it”

Very compelling

A new, exciting and very informative telling of the story. a little disjointed in places making me repeat those bits to make sure I didn't miss something, but that is slight compared to the overall enthrall of this passionately written account of what really happened.

Great story and story telling

I went to visit Alcatraz as an excursion when on a cruise to California. The escape of the three inmates from Alcatraz is a captivating story and many have tried to tell it to discover the truth beyond the things they left behind. This book looked like it would fill in those details. I found it very interesting, but also very disjointed with the first person account (fiction?) and then pages later retelling in third person to validate with further details and description. Also, the story lagged during the middle and even the end. I think the story might be better just told more briefly in third person to relate the facts for the sake of continuity and authority,

Interesting Story

I have been fascinated with Alcatraz since I was a kid. To finally hear the rest of the story was fantastic! To make the escapees real people by telling their stories about growing up was brilliant! I may just have to listen to it again!

So interesting!!

Such a different account than all others I have heard. Was interesting to hear of the family ties, that their lives of crime stemmed from poverty. Would be fascinating to hear how they lived in Brazil what force moved them to change from a life of crime
Is not a real fast paced book but kept my attention throughout

Very interesting to obtain family perspective

This is what I feel a true story that needed to be told. Real facts given by actual family members.

The Truth.

I very much enjoyed this book! I have been fascinated with Alcatraz for a long time and have read many books, written by both historians and prisoners. I have always believed these guys made it, but there were a few details that were missing . This book answers all of my questions. I have no doubt that they were successful. I enjoyed learning about their pre- Alcatraz criminal careers, and their connection to Mickey Cohen, and also the additional details regarding Alfred's death. I recommend this book Alcatraz to fans who are still waiting for new information. For me, this subject never gets old. Narration was perfect.

Very Interesting! Loved it!
