About this listen

When Europe's designer du jour, Jean Luc LeCroix, invites Maddie to show her creations at Paris Fashion Week, Maddie's sure she's died and gone to heaven. That is, until Jean Luc's top model is found dead on the runway, stabbed with a familiar stiletto heel. Sure someone is trying to frame her, Maddie enlists the help of her friends, including the sexy Detective Jack Ramirez, to uncover a daring jewel heist, a devious blackmailer, and even a few skeletons lurking in the closets of those closest to her.

Ok story - but I cant deal with the narrator!

Would you consider the audio edition of Alibi in High Heels to be better than the print version?

I've listened to a few of the high heels books now. I do enjoy the stories for light listening... but I absolutely CANNOT handle the voice of the narrator anymore. This will be the last one.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Her voice is very pitchy and high...

No suprise here

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Maybe. The series is a knockoff of the Stephanie Plum books. So, if you like those, these will be familiar. Not quite as good, but still entertaining

If you’ve listened to books by Gemma Halliday before, how does this one compare?

I got the whole series, listening to them in order, one after another. No better or worse than the last one I listened to,

Did Caroline Shaffer do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yeah

Could you see Alibi in High Heels being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

no, not at all

Really enjoy this series

Good series and adding audio to ebook is VERY good value. I find these books to be light and funny. Very 'I Love Lucy" on Maddie's investigation. I don't know that the series needed the relationship triangle that tried to pop up in this one. I figured out the accomplice but still enjoyed Maddie's process. Looking forward to the next one. Narration is good. Pacing and timing is spot on. I listen to most audio books at 1.2 or 1.3. I think the voice for Maddie, Dana, Mrs R. are great. The voice for Jack is OK but not how I hear it in my head when I'm reading his dialog. Overall, I enjoy listening.

Funny but flawed

I enjoyed the story set in Paris during fashion week despite the necessity to suspend disbelief with her bopping around Europe investigating. I admit to being pretty frustrated with how she treats Ramirez and yet he keeps coming back to her. Nonetheless, I enjoy the light hearted humor of this series.

Best in the series so far!

I won't include a single spoiler, but I will say I love it when a series only gains momentum! When there is no slow trickling off of action or one low tide book after a couple really good action packed ones. This is a lot harder thing for any author to achieve. momentum like this is what generates a true and steady growing audience for the best writers. Book series where you can't put each segment down; one's which you rush to buy the next installment to find out what happens! I'm thrilled with my reads of this series and I hope you will be too! 10 out of 10 would highly recommend these!

I'm done ... No more Maddie Springer for me!

Would you try another book from Gemma Halliday and/or Caroline Schaffer?

Yes, I would try another book from Gemma Halliday and Caroline Schaffer. I just can't take anymore of the unbelievable idiotic adventures of Maddie Springer.

Would you ever listen to anything by Gemma Halliday again?

Yes

Have you listened to any of Caroline Schaffer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No redeeming qualities at all ... zero, ziltch, nada!

Any additional comments?

I like goofy, silly, slapstick, kind of girls doing crazy stuff. Book 3 and 4 made me want to gag! Actually, they made me write a review. Way to idiotic for my taste. I thought Maddie was zany in books 1 and 2 by book 3 she became unrealistic not even in a good fiction way.

What a disappointment

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

As somebody who loved the Stephanie Plum novels, I bought the first six of this series based on the reviews. Where Janet Evanovich has created a likeable character in Stephanie and surrounded her with larger than life characters, Gemma Halliday has created a female character in Maddie Springer who is two dimensional, predictable and not very likeable. She is clearly following an Evanovich style formula with the love interest being a Latin policeman (Spanish not Italian origin) and a series of ridiculous and uninteresting characters.

It may be an LA thing, but if I was a woman, I would not want to be portrayed as being so superficial. Had a man written this story, he would have been pilloried for viewing women as being so shallow.

I would be very surprised if people would enjoy this as a caricature of LA life. As a thriller/mystery story, the plot was poor, the dialogue worse and my interest diminished to non-existent.

What was most disappointing about Gemma Halliday’s story?

Of the six books I have bought, I have listened to one and a half, and will not listen to the rest.

What didn’t you like about Caroline Shaffer’s performance?

Well read, but could not hide the lack of quality in the prose.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Irritation and disappointment.
