About this listen

The streets of Stoneham, New Hampsire, are lined with bookstores and paved with murder.

When she moved to Stoneham, city slicker Tricia Miles met nothing but friendly faces. And when she opened her mystery bookstore, she met friendly competition. But when she finds Doris Gleason dead in her own cookbook store, killed by a carving knife, the atmosphere seems more cutthroat than cordial. Someone wanted to get their hands on the rare cookbook that Doris had recently purchased-and the locals think that someone is Tricia. To clear her name, Tricia will have to take a page out of one of her own mysteries-and hunt down someone who isn't killing by the book.

"A mystery bookstore in a sleepy New England town, a cat named Miss Marple, a nasty murder and a determined heroine make Barrett's delightful debut mystery everything a cozy lover could want and more. Bravo!" (Leann Sweeney, author of the Yellow Rose Mystery Series)

Hang in there, it's worth it!

Almost returned the book after several chapters.
Glad I have it another chance.
The moral relationship stuff that was bugging me was part of the conflict that the characters resolve.
Love the relationship between the sisters.
good job.
Surprised me.

Awesome Story

This is a great first book in a series! Right away you are ducked into the story and you won't want to come back to the real world.

who DUN IT?

I enjoy these types of books, and although this one has multiple story lines it felt encumbered at times and as if we'd never get to the actual WHO DUN IT and WHY? could have ended 6 chapters earlier, but I still enjoyed it! give it a try ..

An easy listen

Good narration and an easy, fluffy storyline. Kept my interest easily without being overly dramatic.

Great Read!

Any additional comments?

Love the story. You really get to feel you know the characters as real people. Enjoyed every minute and was almost dissapointed for the book to end--except I wanted to know HOW it ended.

Good cozy read

This is a good cozy mystery, complete with interesting characters & an okay plot. It's definitely a light read and a bit predictable but it's only the first in the series so it didn't have enough time to develop enough characters to add any big twists in. I'm hoping to give some of the other books a chance to see where it goes.
Angelica is a bit annoying of a character so I was pretty bummed that Trish's visiting sister was written in as a permanent character at the end of the story. I think they could do without her, and that's my only big hesitation going forward. I'm not sure if she will ruin the series or add to it.
Overall a good light listen, good narration & a cozy read.

A Good Cozy Type Mystery For Everyone

I love mysteries with murder but no gore, psychopathy, graphic sex (that's what porn is for), or romance/mush. Yes, I'm a 44 y/o female but dislike the cutesy cozies. For reference, my favorite cozy series so far are by M.C. Beaton (Hamish MacBeth 1st & Agatha Raisin 2nd).This book fits my requirements. I believe I got it on sale but wouldn't have been disappointed if I'd used a credit.

I almost gave the story 5 stars but 2 things bothered me which I'll elude to without spoiling anything. 1st, the sister has some child-like tendencies (blurting out loud about possible evidence at the worst time & being selfish which in fairness she is working on). The biggest annoyance was that a character in power not only doesn't get fired but she doesn't even get demoted &/or transferred. This means the character will be in the next book of the series & will probably be an even bigger annoyance for the main character (and me) & may still be sucky at her important job. I was ready to buy that 2nd book with a credit right away but will read through reviews on it first.

Lastly, the narrator is great. She doesn't do extremes when voicing different characters but alters her voice enough for you to tell them apart. Her voice is also very pleasant to listen to. She's never loud or abrasive so if you happen to fall asleep she won't wake you up (beware of the awful intro & exit music though as it plays for about a minute while she's reading so it could startle you if the book ends while you're sleeping) & she's not too soft nor monotonous which could cause one to fall asleep or become bored.

Great twists

This was a new author for me. The quaint town with a bold town planner seemed like the perfect set up for a dull story. Thankfully, not so! Pleaant change of pace for this murder mystery is that the characters are not all predictable. The narrator could have had a bit more polish, but this did not detract from the story. I will look forward to another by this author.
