About this listen

You tried to save a life. Now you're fighting to save your own.

It should have been an idyllic day for the Turner family - until a dying man, beaten beyond all recognition, arrives at their home, uttering the words 'help me'.

Rob and Wendy Turner and their children try to explain away the horrific scene as being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but in the days that follow, their lives are threatened in ways they could never imagine.

The family is unaware that they are being watched by someone with their own terrifying agenda, who will stop at nothing to fulfil their own twisted desires. But when hidden secrets come rushing to the surface, it's clear not everything is as it seems in this happy family. Are the Turners victims of circumstance - or does the key to their fate lie closer to home?

Forced to fight for everything they hold dear, can they save themselves before time runs out - or will their act of compassion see them paying the ultimate price?

A heart-stopping, shocking and tense thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last minute.

"Tom Bale is one of the best British thriller writers around." (Simon Kernick)

I will not be recommending this book to anyone. I was actually giving out 4 stars for a while and wondering if I was just crazy in love with the genre. Upon getting to another book before this and now this one, nope, those were just very well written. I expected more from Bale. Plots are layered upon each other only to be quickly done away with. The pacing is a rollercoaster ride, with the end taking no turns, but merely chugging along at a snail's pace. The final 30 minutes seemed contrived for added action, and the hour leading up to that was painful. A decent story if you are between intense thrillers, but don't want to switch genres. I haven't given up on the author though. I'll try one more, but I wasn't largely impressed. This wasn't terrible, but there are better.

I wanted better...

Nice slow start, except for the dying man. I enjoyed the building of the plot but lost interest during a protract ed sequence of violence. I finally skepped all that... the book ended up being pretty good.

start so well

This book was Stellar, It's fast paced, with a healthy dose of suspense, Action and Adventure..

I always enjoy when the victim is someone you love to hate. pick the villain and it fits. I enjoy this type of psychological thriller because everyone's a suspect and you don't just guess the answer right away.

I look forward to more by this author ..
